Does anyone bother washing their ceiling lightshades

I have a combination of uplighters, glass shades and faux chandeliers.

The uplighters are full of dust..... and cobwebs and I plan to clean them today. Thing is do I bother washing (hot, soapy water) the rest of the glass shades, wires and fittings to make it all nice and clean for Christmas and so I can smugly admire them all later.

BTW, house is fairly clean, I have a cleaner but not sure I should have her wiping the actually fittings etc

Am I being too OTT? How often do you do yours?

I have never thought to do this, I am a bit scared to look now Xmas Blush

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 13/12/2015 09:09

Last time was when i moved house 6 years ago bit they did look good!

Occasiinally get the little hoover brush on them if that helps.

Bunbaker · 13/12/2015 09:10

Occasionally, when I remember.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 13/12/2015 09:26

Only if I can be bothered when I change the lightbulb.

HemlockStarglimmer · 13/12/2015 09:45

I vacuum them if my back isn't hurting too much when I do the house work. So they don't get cleaned very often...

Hoover them weekly but give them a wipe with a damp cloth every 6 months?

DamsonInDistress · 13/12/2015 09:59

My uplighters I hoover out every couple of months and take down and wash annually, at Christmas if we're at home or the following spring if we're away. I clean the wall switches with cleaner every week and the wall fixings of the side lights too, but they're easy to reach, the ceiling ones less so.

topcat2014 · 13/12/2015 10:07

Just remember, of course, that water and electricity don't mix - so I wouldn't bother trying to clean wires etc. Just, if you must, clean anything that you can physically take down from the ceiling.

never cleaned a light fitting in my life

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 13/12/2015 10:15

Yes. I clean my light fittings once every 75 years...

AntiHop · 13/12/2015 10:49

I hoover mine very very occasionally.

Archer26 · 13/12/2015 10:58

Wait, what? This is a thing. Blush

Refuses to look up for rest of day in case it's carnage up there

Yes i do wash them

In soapy water in the sink. It really does make a difference.

With fabric ones i take them down and hoover them throughly, they dont have any marks on them as no one touches them.

I do this about once every 2 months or so. You can tell a massive difference once they are done

Purplepixiedust · 13/12/2015 11:05

We do ours we decorate or when one of us notices they look dirty.

If you have time and will enjoy seeing them clean, go for it.

rainydaygrey · 13/12/2015 11:07

I do them when I change a lightbulb.

BrendaandEddie · 13/12/2015 11:09

i only found out people washed their window opening bits recently

Fourarmsv2 · 13/12/2015 11:58

I do when all the daddylongleg shadows inside freak me out!

SparklyLeprechaun · 13/12/2015 12:17

About once every couple of years. I sometimes notice how dirty they are but can't be bothered getting the ladders out to get them down (high ceilings). Hmm, maybe I should do it for Christmas.

thebestfurchinchilla · 13/12/2015 13:07

What? Window opening bit washing? That's a new one. I must be a right dirty cow!! Blush

This thread has made me feel like a total slob and a dreadful housekeeper

Birdsgottafly · 13/12/2015 18:15

When I had a chandelier, I did it monthly, because it was beautiful.

I Hoover over my more modern one, weekly and clean them every couple of months, when I'm doing a deep clean.
