To ask if you've ever been "fooled" by the internet?

I have a nasty cough and cold, and because of some upcoming medical tests I've been asked not to take anything but paracetemol for a couple of days. Fine. So I browsed around the internet for anything I can do to soothe the cough, and I ran across this bastard thing several times. It seemed a bit reasonable to my cough-addled brain, so off I went to pick up pineapple juice (along with vicks for my feet, honey, chilis & every other bloody thing the internet says would help.)

Did it help? Bollox, did it. Before, I had a cough and a cold. Now, I have a cough and a cold and case of the runs that makes every cough a white-knuckle adventure into whether I might accidentally poo myself. Only then, did I think to look on snopes.

Cheer me up, anybody? Has anyone else fallen for stupid stuff on the internet (that you're willing to admit)?

I keep getting people sharing stuff about veg having more protein than meat/eggs etc... I'm veggie myself, but don't think making stuff up actually helps the cause!

For some reason bonsai kittens popped into my head yesterday, am relieved to find out they're not real... Blush

Jux · 12/12/2015 22:20

Wait! Bonsai kittens???! I want some, half a dozen would do for a start..

Bonsai kittens

Why don't I live in a universe where they are real?

Jux · 12/12/2015 22:25

Oh, I've just googled the kittens.

NO. I do NOT want those. I want really cute very very small kittens that are natural and not grown in jars.

TwoSmellyDogs · 12/12/2015 22:29

Not the answer to your AIBU but I was once recommended to ease a particularly annoying cough by sucking slowly on a square of milk chocolate. It really worked so maybe you could try that?
Hey - maybe I should peddle my cure on the internet.

Please send £5 to Paypal @ [email protected] Grin

But seriously - try it - it really helped me Smile

I am a bad person. My family share loads of stupid stuff about Muslims coming into your house and pissing on your Christmas tree for e.g. They believe anything. So I share these type of things and get a cheap sense of satisfaction from it.

you need to tickle it Carpenter

elementofsurprise · 12/12/2015 23:35

Jux I suppose kittens are "really cute very very small kittens", if you compare them to tigers etc... Grin

I got excited about the concept of pygmy elephants in Borneo. I thought they would be dog-sized...

My husband and the rest of his office fell for the blue waffle disease shit. It took me approx 5 secs to demonstrate that it was a load of bollocks. I'm probably a professional cynic, but my rule is that if it sounds too good to be true or too horrible to be real it almost always is. This is at the grand old age of (nearly) 40 though - in my youth I bought into all manner of shit, even homeopathy (hangs head in shame).

Sgtmajormummy · 13/12/2015 00:10

You know that jungle bird that can imitate camera shutters and chainsaws?
They made a spoof video of David Attenborough being echoed and mocked by this bird until he walked off in disgust.
I fell for that one.

And the cars that bounce out of nowhere and hit you. Blush

DropYourSword · 13/12/2015 00:48

I don't get fooled because I'm far too cynical. And I use snopes.

This does mean however, that if something DID actually work I'd miss out, because I'd think it was a load of old bollocks!

Pholcodeine linctus for cough, gargle with warm lemonade for sore throat. Soluble aspirin too.
