In the past we ve been very short of money and the dcs have had small presents or perhaps deals on cheap mobile phones and have been happy enough. This yr dd 18 started work and ive been doing fulltime so rather than buy something disappointing i would like a ball park figure from you wise mumsnetters.
Our income last year was@ 2k a month.i was thinking cinema or gym subscription any suggestions ds is 16 dd 18 .

I have spent about 200, last year his Xbox one with other gaming stuff was about 400.

fuzzpig · 12/12/2015 17:30

Can't comment on the amount at all but a cinema subscription is a really brilliant present, or a giftcard if you can't manage a full year's worth.

For my DSDs a couple of years ago I got them a cinema gift card and some shakeaway vouchers to go with it :o went down very well! My DSDs now have the unlimited cinema membership and they get heaps of use out of it.

pretend · 12/12/2015 17:45

It shouldn't be about value, it's about getting them something they will appreciate.

I reckon I might have cleared 600 to 800 quid on DD this year, and it has left things a bit tight. I love getting her things though and I don't spend what I haven't got. However she's got some expensive stuff and lots of cheaper bits and bobs.

Everyone makes whatever purchases they think are right for their income and their kids.

Lucylou333 · 12/12/2015 17:50

Apparently yes ! I'm hoping it's one of those mini things with 4 little ones. I'm slightly jealous, a bit disturbed and pleased for DD but also feel a bit pissed off they've got her about 5 times what I have.

Higge · 12/12/2015 17:53

i'm guessing somewhere between £2-300. It's the stocking gifts that add up.

Topseyt · 12/12/2015 17:57

I have three DDs and think I have spent £100 - £150 on each of them. Can't afford any more than that.

You spend what you are comfortable with. There are no right or wrong answers.

seasidesally · 12/12/2015 18:04

£300 each child x3

Lightbulbon · 12/12/2015 18:06

We are in a similar position: been broke gor years now have a bit more £££.

Teen will get laptop and a new console and tokens for clothes/books.

Younger DC will get Lego set, scooter, skates, board games.

Tamponlady · 12/12/2015 20:36

I have spent

120 my son is 16

He has a remote control helicopter that you can attach phone to to film
One Star Wars t shirt
Hi how hitch hikers guide to the galaxy box set of book
A hoody saying (section boys) a rap group he is fond of
And a Venus fly trap compete with a test tube of flys for you to feed it (grim)

I think it's very much up to you what you spent we have a few rules we won't get into debut for Christmas also we don't go mad he's fairly well behaved doing well in school and we don't buy loads year round but we do tKe note of things he mentions during the year

Somthing you want
Somthing your u need
Somthing to wear and somthing to read

That's all that's required

Tamponlady · 12/12/2015 20:40

toldmywrath · 12/12/2015 20:48

I can't understand why your DD already knows what she's getting for Xmas from her boyfriend & family Lucylou Isn't it supposed to be a surprise?

toldmywrath · 12/12/2015 20:56

I can see why you're asking the question OP, but people have different ideas about what to spend. We try to limit to about £60 per child. Our DC have always shown gratitude for whatever we've bought them (altho' when my DS2 was 7 he asked for a coffee grinder & round the world tickets in his letter to Santa- he only got one of those items Grin )

CakeNinja · 12/12/2015 21:16

I was thinking the same toldmywrath, takes all the fun out of it and reads more like a shopping list Confused
All lovely things though, and surely she will be over the moon but I don't tell anyone what I'm getting them!

Op, as others have said, it's not really an answerable question as there are too many external factors that we can't possibly know about. Spend what you want on something they will appreciate. And don't compare yourself to anyone else Xmas Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/12/2015 21:18

We''ll spend about £100 per dd this year, and then I've promised to take them sales shopping, as they could both do with new jeans and a coat.

smintoes · 12/12/2015 21:31

We'll spend about £130 on DS 16 this year, but last year we spent about £900 as he wanted an expensive computer. Most years it's around £100-200. Our income is higher than yours and I would have been happy to spend more on him but there isn't that much that he wants.
