To ask about this WEIRD house buying situation

Seen a flat we like the look of, well within budget, great locale. Etc.

We brought a surveyor friend along to 2nd viewing to check out the building as some of the "Home Report" could be iffy (we're in Scotland).

Top flat in 1980's block. Been vacant for a while, we understand the owner had just rented it out to tenants.

Surveyor chum took a peek in the attic of the flat.

Then...

wait for it...

An EGG falls down. It does not hit our friend but lands on the floor (much to the embarrassment of estate agents).

Our stoic chum is not fazed but continues looking at roof space. It's like someone set it up to fall out Confused as a kind of weird "trap".

Our friend said "well people put rubbish in lofts, don't worry about it". But I'm more suspicious, it wasn't like there was lots of food stored up there or anythingConfused

Now. I'm veering on the side of making an offer. But chatting to other residents of the building we were led to believe that the last tenants of the flat we want to buy were anti-social nightmares, needed to be evicted, etc. I reckon they might have stuck the egg up there to piss off the owners?

So now I'm wondering if the whole place could have been sabotaged (and more seriously than a childish "egg on head of nasty owners" situation)? Like seriously interfering with things that could crop up later (eg electrics and things like that)

Is the whole place booby trapped? Sad I love it, I must say apart from that.

Well I have absolutely no advice but it really made me laugh, so thanks for your post. Grin

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/12/2015 20:20

Was it a chicken egg?

Id be more worried there were wild pigeons up in the roof space.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/12/2015 20:21

And was it rotten? Eggs go off, after a couple of months it would stink. How long has the flat been empty?

Dec2015 · 11/12/2015 20:21

I honestly had to read that twice as I that EGG was an acronym!

Go back again....

Curiouserandcuriouser30 · 11/12/2015 20:22

Yes I would definitely wonder about birds in the loft. Maybe a nest? I wouldn't jump straight to booby traps.

Was he in the attic? And it fell from the roof into the attic? Or did it fall from the attic into the house? Sorry, I need a full picture so I can process this. Grin

slaponawettowel · 11/12/2015 20:23

Yes, like a normal sized egg. I actually once worked with a weird bullying manager who used to slip eggs into people's bags for a "joke".

Purple it was kind of funny (and much admired my friends "get out a tissue, pass to estate agent, then continue looking for roof issues" attitude). I'm half-laughing and half-worried they've also pulled some "prawns in curtain rails" or "slice through some wires" stunt, which would be hassle to deal with?

She not he. It was like a roof hatch (not too high, just a small stepladder needed) so just a bit of wood that needed to be moved. I wasn't looking directly when it happened, but the egg was just on the floor and a couple of "oh shit's" were said.

You can get the electrics checked. And the gas. It's no biggy

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 11/12/2015 20:29

Are eggs lion marked in Scotland? Did the shell have a red lion on?

If not I reckon there's a large bird nesting Up there.

caitlinohara · 11/12/2015 20:42

That's one of the funniest things I have ever heard! I bet the estate agent will be telling that story for a few years to come too.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 11/12/2015 20:44

Meh. I've seen eggs end up in weird places.

I wouldn't worry about it.

SaucyJack · 11/12/2015 20:46

I misread it as ECG at first.

Disappointed now.

uglyflowers · 11/12/2015 20:49

angry poltergeist?

hefzi · 11/12/2015 20:52

You might have the Roc up there en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roc_(mythology) - in that case, the house might pay for itself as a tourist attraction? You'd not need a burglar alarm, anyway!

notquitehuman · 11/12/2015 20:52

That was kinda funny! I would be checking the vents etc for mouldy fish though. Not sure there's much they could do to sabotage the electrics without it being immediately obvious.

Dipankrispaneven · 11/12/2015 20:53

If it's been vacant for a while, issues like prawns in the curtain rails would be very evident by now.

Bakeoffcake · 11/12/2015 21:06

It was just a yoke joke.

I'll get my coat.

Ohorgodssake · 11/12/2015 21:13

It could have been worse. Prawns stuffed down the back of radiators for months are horrendous!

Prawns hidden down the back of radiators are horrendous! Smile

slaponawettowel · 11/12/2015 21:16

That's kind of what I'm worried about ohforgodssake that they've done other things that aren't just "ha ha ffs" and which genuinely require sorting and will drive us crazy Hmm

littlewoollypervert · 11/12/2015 21:21

Maybe go round on a warm day (or put the heating on) to check for smells and switch everything off and on. You wouldn't want to "shell out" for a house with something wrong with it would you?

sodabreadjam · 11/12/2015 21:33

Not a clue about your particular flat, but I watched "Homes Under the Hammer" this morning and a couple bought a flat in Glasgow. They were then stuck with a bill of £2900 from Glasgow City Council - their share of clearing the communal loft space of birds.

3luckystars · 11/12/2015 21:37

An egg!!! That is so funny, I am really laughing at that!!
