To not understand why I need to sterilise

Why, according to the NHS, do I need to sterilise baby's weaning bowls, spoons etc if she's under 6 months old when she sticks every single thing she can find in her mouth anyway. She must be getting loads of germs from her toys etc surely?

Did everyone else bother doing this?

I used to freeze home made puréed food in the freezer ice trays .I'm sure the dishwasher is hot enough to prevent infection (the handbook to it should tell you what temp it gets to?)

Grin stairbears We are waiting for 6 months (i.e. next week) for weaning. DS can't actually sit up by himself for longer than 0.5 seconds, but loves his highchair, so we'll see what happens.

MissTwister I've just got some weaning pots from Mamas&Papas, they say they just go on the top shelf of the dishwasher, although you can also put them in the steriliser. I'm pretty sure that as long as you remove any old food residues thoroughly, though, you'll be just fine.

I only sterilsed bottles that had milk in. And even with that, I used to put them in eht dishwasher rather than doing the whole setrlising with tablets thingy anyway.

I've never setrilised containers for purees etc. I have washed them carefully, the same way I would with any other pot I use for the family.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 08/12/2015 10:58

I don't sterilise pots or cups OP, as PPs have said I also just stick them in the top shelf of the dishwater, it gets plenty hot enough that I don't worry about any remaining bacteria. I only sterilise the bottle I make any milk in.

Never sterilised anything, ebf and weaned at 4 months.

Artandco · 08/12/2015 11:09

Surely the freezer will kill any germs also?

Don't they say to put soft toys in the freezer to kills germs/ bugs etc if they have them?

GoldPlatedBacon · 08/12/2015 11:21

When I was in the hospital the midwife said we needed to boil water for topping and tailing. DP was very Hmm as no one boils water before a bath hence we never have boiled water

Perhaps the 6month mark for sterilising is to do with when you're recommended to wean, so therefore you wouldn't have any bowls etc before then? Just guessing though. Also I assume wait until baby has had his/her vaccinations?
I didn't bother sterilising weaning equipment. Just washed it properly. A friend said she gave up when she caught her dad chewing on the cats bed.
