Disability - reasonable adjustments

Posting here for traffic:

Partner at uni. Has registered disability and in receipt of benefits.

He often needs more time to hand essays in as a result of his disability. This is all agreed with the university disability office team.

The department where he studies are being difficult about this saying it will make a precedent for other students. Hmm

Surely this can't be if he has this under reasonable adjustments within the EA?

Any legal people here tell him what he should say?

Thanks

Btw his learning support mentions extra time, and that he may need even more time given the unpredictable nature of his condition.

Good point re guide dog and then not allowing as everyone would want to bring their pets in!

  1. The disability team need to get off their arses, it IS their job to negotiote this with tutors, not your dps job.
  2. If he's entitled to extra time then he's entitled to extra time and there is nothing the tutor can do about it.
  3. Remind the disability team of their duty of care and that they should be negotiating on his behalf. If they fail to do so, remind them that they need to work within the terms of the equalities act and that by not advocating on behalf of dh, they are not working within those terms.

Hope you can get it sorted it's disgraceful they are not helping. If student a takes 10h for essay and student b needs 20h to achieve same because of disability that's a reasonable adjustment. He should get assignments earlier if possible or longer. He took up a place with support in place they can't just say no !

I would ask them to justifuy why this adjustment is not reasonable.
