Checking in... Blush

MerdeAlor · 03/12/2015 19:44

You're more likely to end up with a fungal infection in your nails if you leave varnish on for an extended period.
Fungal infections in nails can be an absolute bastard to get rid of, meaning you may end up with infected nails for the rest of your life.

LetGoOrBeDragged · 03/12/2015 19:44

I think it's gross. Don't understand the viewpoint that no one will see them - you will see them!

carabos · 03/12/2015 19:55

merde that's interesting. I had a small fungal infection a couple of years back which, when I asked the beautician who noticed it when doing my pedicure whether it was caused by the nail varnish, gave me this look Hmm and said no. It seemed obvious to me.

In my own defence, I only paint my toenails for the summer since the infection has cleared up.

Chattymummyhere · 03/12/2015 19:57

Last did mine in August which was 3 covered plus a gel cover so a right bastard to remove nearly all grown out now. I don't like feet and try to avoid my own so only paint for flip flop season. Plus I'm getting a bigger and bigger bump so can't be doing with all that leaning to remove some nail varnish nobody is going to see till my flip flops come back out.

MerdeAlor · 03/12/2015 19:59

Some fungal infections thrive in dark deoxygenated areas like underneath nail varnish. If you have any fungal spores on your skin when the varnish goes on it can take hold in the nail.
Most people do have fungal spores on their skin, especially in winter when we are wearing thick socks and warm shoes.
No nail varnish should be worn for more than 2 weeks.

badg3r · 03/12/2015 20:01

I've been playing that game since July. There is still a TINY bit left on my big right toe, for anyone who's interested Wink

PurpleHairAndPearls · 03/12/2015 20:11

Well I hate to swoop in like the Angel of Doom (is there such a thing?!) but I can share that if you do sport the half painted toes on the end of hairy legs look...

please bear in mind that if you are ever then rushed to hospital, your attending doctor will be absolutely gorgeous and I can confirm that the embarrassment of him (oh god) having to remove my black tights (with a hole in the toe. Of course) to be confronted with The Most Gopping Toes In The World is excruciating Blush

My fact, I curled my toes in such embarrassment that I haven't seen my toenails since...Grin

MrsJuggler · 03/12/2015 21:07

Well it's a bit yucky... looks scruffy, like the toe-owner has let herself go a bit, frankly. But I do it too.

MrsJuggler · 04/12/2015 21:05

Please believe me when I say that GoldenSpaceCadets' toenails are fully free of varnish & are, in fact, bloody gorgeous. Why she feels the need to hide them at any time of year, I do not know! That is all.

GoldenSpaceCadet · 04/12/2015 22:12

Thankyou PurpleHairAndPearls and MrsJuggler I have just done my Friday night pedicure and my toenails are back to their 'au naturale sans polish' ready for May 2016 ☺️

Yes! It's a personal challenge to see what will win - flip flop weather or nail varnish. Currently nothing on all toes apart from the two big ones. They're looking good til at least Feb I think

WitchWay · 04/12/2015 23:03

I don't mind toenail polish growing out a bit, but as soon as there's the tiniest chip, then it all has to come off ASAP Grin

LaLaLaaaa · 05/12/2015 03:13

Had mine done with gel in June, before my DS was born. It's still hanging on in there! Can't afford to get it redone and it won't come off with remover. I find it quite fascinating to see it grow (gross I know)

redredblue · 05/12/2015 03:24

YANBU
I have had the same nail polish on since August

Senpai · 05/12/2015 03:45

My god, I have found my people

Me too! Grin

I used to be really good about it, but since DD I'm worried about the fumes and her breathing any in. So I keep it to when I can paint them outside.

Rollermum · 05/12/2015 04:03

I used to do this - or leave it on for ages anyway - but like Merde says has left what I think is fungal nail infection this time which I only discovered when I took the last dregs of August polish off. So I won't be doing it again.

Brioche201 · 05/12/2015 04:15

The most banal self indulgent thread I have e er read on mumsnet.

jorahmormont · 05/12/2015 04:23

Wait... People still paint their toenails?

Mermaidhair1 · 05/12/2015 04:32

Pedicure every 4 weeks for me.
My feet and toenails have to look nice.

GoldenSpaceCadet · 05/12/2015 10:35

Thankyou Brioche do I get a special award for starting the most banal thread? Grin

Stripyhoglets · 05/12/2015 11:50

I do this too. It's not really an intentional decision but as I bite my fingernails I never paint them so never really think about removing the toenail polish!
