to switch the heating off overnight?

Is this not the done thing anymore? The last couple of times heating has come up in conversation people have been surprised that our heating goes off at 10pm, then back on at 6am - it's off in the day too. I sometimes work from home, so stick it on in the day if cold.

They told me it was expensive and inefficient, but I thought that most people didn't have it on 24hrs/day - maybe I'm wrong, what do you do?

I have mine on for two hours a day - one in the morning and one in the evening. Why would you have it on when you are in bed? Just use another blanket if you're cold. It must cost a fortune.

I'm the same as you and thought it was normal?

I always turn mine off at night, it gets too hot otherwise.

Erm ours only stays on overnight if it's seriously cold - like the year we had several feet of snow and it was -17 for two weeks.

Ours comes on at half five, off at half ten. On at half six and off at eight. If I'm home in the day I usually put on an extra jumper, or if I'm sat I snuggle under an electric heated blanket.

I don't know anyone who leaves their heating on overnight. It would be useless here as I sleep with the window open even in the middle of winter.

We have a minimum set all the time. That way if the outside temp plummets to a nasty minus number the house won't get too cold for comfort. But the active heating goes off as we go to bed.

So, our thermostat is set to 16 all the time, every day of the year, so technically it is always on. But, if the temp is higher the heating won't come on and so won't cost us a penny! We also have it set to a couple of degrees higher on a timer for first thing and evenings.

Whilst we do wear warm 'sloppies' including thick socks, neither of us enjoys being able to see our breath every time we breath out

I couldn't stand the heating on overnight!
Mine goes off at 10 and on at 6, and not on during the day unless I'm in.
My underfloor heating in the kitchen is on low all the time from November to March.

Ours goes on 6.30 -7.30 in the morning & then 5.00-8.00 in the evening. If it's cold when we're home overtheweekend we'll put it on then aswell

Ours is off at night and in the day if we're out. We always have the bedroom window open too, for fresh air. A few years ago it got down to -14C overnight one night. I slept like a log. Snug as a bug in a rug. In fact I think I sleep better the colder it is. Did a night at -27C up Ben Nevis once (coldest recorded UK temperature) - great night's kip!

There's a fallacy that it costs more to heat the house back up, than to keep it warm all the time. People say the same thing about hot water in the water tank. Neither are true. And I have a degree in thermodynamics so I know what I'm talking about here ;)

Ours goes off at 10 - I thought it was normal? I can't sleep if I'm too warm so the heating stays off unless it gets seriously sub zero! Didn't have a choice in my old house though as it was single glazed and drafty and the radiators were all singles so the heating stayed on in the winter as it took hours to heat the house up again if it went off. Our new house is much better insulated.

That's exactly what they told me TheOnlyWayToEatSandwiches - it was 'better' to keep the house warm - I thought some sort of heating revolution had gone on without me, and that I must be doing it wrong.

my mother has it on overnight, but then she is elderly and it gets very cold if not. she does turn it down.

we rarely have it on overnight. I think the last time was when temperatures dropped to minus 12 several years ago. the childrenwere a lot younger then too.

I simply cannot afford for the heating to be on overnight - its on for an hour in the evening, but we do have a log burner. I am home during the day alot but no heating, its just too expensive. and i resent lining their pockets

But no, the heating comes on here for two hours in the evening and that's it.

Ours off overnight too. Can't breathe in the morning if I'm staying somewhere that it's on all night. Too stuffy.
I do live in the Highlands though and we do cold well through thr night in winter so sometimes it's on through the night but rarely.

I would never have my heating on overnight. Very rarely all day either even in the depths of winter.

I once stayed at a friend's where the heating was on all night. I was really dehydrated the next morning. It's unnecessary to heat a house if you're not in or it's nighttime. I think it's a myth that it's more economical to have the heating on low constantly rather than firing it up when you actually need it.

Can't stand having it on at night, makes me feel rotten when I wake up.

I think its normal i wouldnt keep the heating on all night you would stew in your bed extra blankets hot water bottle if its cold then heating set to come on in the morning nobody i know keeps the heating on over night.

I hate heated bedrooms; they make you feel all bunged up and sinus-y and I don't think you sleep as well. Would rather it a bit nippy and jump into bed with a hot water bottle

Off overnight unless very, very cold. Sometimes it is freezing here in the day so I sit with a hot water bottle when working on the PC
