To bin these advent calendars as the chocolate isn't foil sealed

They were a gift from ex mil but if they are not foil wrapped the chocolate is going to be nasty tasting, probably off and not that healthy right?

Choc doesn't go white when its off it goes like that when its not been properly tempered and left in the open it can still be eaten. I remember when cadbury came unfoilwrapped and just in a plastic tray within the box no cellophane either - I am not dead and I ate it for a month straight

wigglesrock · 30/11/2015 10:03

Advent calendars were like that when I was young - no wrapping bar the calendar itself. I'm not sure what health inducing characteristics are contained in foil. If they're not nice the kids won't eat the rest of them.

DyslexicScientist · 30/11/2015 10:04

You can tell as one of the windows is a bit broken and the whole thing rattles as they are loose.

I'm pretty sure chocolate goes off. I've traveled round India many times and eaten lot of off chocolate that had obviously melted and solidified many times are was as brittle as a party ring. When chocolate blooms its off IMO.

Oh really didnt know that so thought when it went white it was on the turn Blush

JugglingFromHereToThere · 30/11/2015 10:05

Ooh, must see if I can pick up some choc advent calenders for neices and nephews and DC today.
If ex MIL has done the same for yours then I think the relationship is worth the risk of dodgy chocolate - it has too much sugar in to ever go off!
It doesn't need two lots of packaging - presumably it's behind a window?

GruntledOne · 30/11/2015 10:05

I'm just thinking of all those times I've bought fudge in places like Cornwall. It's out on the counter unwrapped, it's put into a bag unwrapped, and it's lovely. I've never known anyone die of unwrapped fudge poisoning, even that time we forgot we had it and discovered and ate it four months later.

SunshineAndShadows · 30/11/2015 10:06

Has anyone ever ecperienced food poisoning due to non-foil wrapped chocolate???

GruntledOne · 30/11/2015 10:06

They're behind windows, OP, that means they are more than adequately protected. And how likely do you really think it is that they have melted and solidified many times?

WorraLiberty · 30/11/2015 10:09

Advent calenders always rattle when you shake them.

Personally I wouldn't bin them.

Then again I sucked part of an old bus ticket off of a Trebor mint I found in my pocket on the way to work this morning Grin

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 30/11/2015 10:11

You are bonkers op.

Rattling is normal. So is not being foil wrapped for everything, it may even be fresher.

What brand is is it and is it in date?

Do you have a difficult relationship with mil? Because I'm wondering if your response is more spite than reason.

peggyundercrackers · 30/11/2015 10:11

Chocolate doesnt really go off - if your worried about the chocolate being off send them to me and I will test them all and will post back here with the results...

cleaty · 30/11/2015 10:11

If chocolate goes off, it simply affects the taste. That is why you have a best before on chocolate, and not a use by. Give them to someone else who would appreciate them.

Bearbehind · 30/11/2015 10:14

Chocolate Advent calendars never used to be foil wrapped.

I remember opening windows to find the chocolate had slipped down inside the packaging which resulted in shaking to try and get it back to the window which made most of the rest of the chocolates fall out too.

What memories Grin

PaulAnkaTheDog · 30/11/2015 10:16

Bear ah the memories Grin

AnnoyedByAlfieBear · 30/11/2015 10:18

Chocolate that has "bloomed" is not of! The cocoa has just come to the surface. It'll be fine!

Stimpack · 30/11/2015 10:20

OP do you like your ex MIL?

All advent calendars rattle.

MerryMarigold · 30/11/2015 10:23

I wish advent calendars weren't foil wrapped as it is a pain to get it out of the foil (need finger nails, DC don't have finger nails).

CFSsucks · 30/11/2015 10:27

Do you just want an excuse to throw them away because they are from your ex MIL? Sounds like it. What a load of rubbish. All calendars rattle and they aren't all foil wrapped either so YABU. But you have been told that may times and are still arguing your point so I'm not convinced you'll listen.

Just throw them then explain it to your children. Hmm

SoupDragon · 30/11/2015 10:27

The washing up liquid stu was ecover!

Does that somehow make it OK?

Helenluvsrob · 30/11/2015 10:29

Stop projecting your dislike of ex MIL and let the kids have the blooming chocolate!

ouryve · 30/11/2015 10:30

Ecover WUL perfectly healthy to eat.

Non-foil-wrapped chocolate likely to cause a tummy upset.

Okayyyy....Hmm

ouryve · 30/11/2015 10:31

And, please tell me you're not really a scientist, OP.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 30/11/2015 10:32

Check the use by date.

Unless your MIL has form for buying old advent calendars in the sale and keeping them for a couple of years, they'll be fine.

MerryMarigold · 30/11/2015 10:32

Worra, Grin at the Trebor. I thought I was the only one to do things like that. My worst one (I am actually ashamed of that one) was picking up some chewing gum which fell out of my mouth - in Heathrow airport. YUCK! (But I didn't get sick so there).

gamerchick · 30/11/2015 10:35

You're being ridiculous OP. Are you sure it's not because they're from your MIL more than anything else? Give them away if you're going to be prissy about it but fgs don't meep on IRL about bad stomachs and off chocolate from bloody advent calendars.
