To be a bit unnerved after being a victim of fraud

Mine and dh's joint account has been attacked. Someone has tried to set up a huge overdraft and also tried to spend ££££ online as well. The bank have locked us out of the account until dh goes in to bank to be identified. Luckily it looks like anything suspicious has been blocked before money has been withdrawn but I'm still a bit concerned. The fraud team have been very cagey and won't tell me whats happened or how. I feel a bit alarmed by this as I've been happily buying Xmas presents online over the last few weeks and so has dh. Does anyone have any idea how these things happen as its a bit of a mystery to me! Bank also recommend we close this account asap which is a real pain.

They won't. I work in a bank complaint related role.

So many people complain because they feel as though the fraud team aren't doing/saying enough when something happens. But although it seems like 'nothing' further is done, banks have huge teams of people dedicated to tracing fraudsters, working with the police and national fraud units and so on. Although, to be fair, if your fraud is for a couple of thousand and not in line with a current trend then your fraudster is probably towards the bottom of their investigative priority list.

They won't give you any further details or updates though, because the general public can't be trusted with potentially sensitive information...which is entirely sensible. Don't badger the bank for more details, because they won't divulge them, it's pointless, and it just takes banks time away from actually investigating the issues themselves.

we were done a couple of years ago - Natwest fraud team alerted us to it as they thought some transactions were suspicious. We weren't sure how they got Debit Card details, however they very silly people used amongst other things it to purchase food through Just Eat!

It didn't take long to sort out, had to sign a statement saying it wasn't either DH nor myself who had paid the purchases and money was replaced by Natwest within a couple of days (we never found out the outcome of the case)

My parents were done a few years ago (atm machine) but as luck would have it my Dad's card was used in France at the exact time he was in the bank having a meeting regarding changing his mortgage! (they got their money back very quickly!

You'll probably never know how it happened - the best thing is to be as secure as you can on all counts.

Get on your credit score via equifax or experience and see if any other applications have been made in your name.

Call Action Fraud as this is the police online fraud section.

Consider registering with CIFAS to up security on any applications made in your name ( not without its downfalls as any genuine applications have to be vetted more)

In our case it was the postman!

My debit card was cloned - the bank reckon it was at a cashpoint as I don't use it for much else- was a Barclays one but I think can be any.

I have Experian Credit Expert- they contact me straight away if there is any change to my record ie anyone applying for loans etc in my name.
I can keep an eye on my credit score as well.
I have the double step thing set up for all online card purchases and Paypal.
Pay cash in Petrol stations and get cash back in the supermarket.

I got a phone call from the bank this morning to say they had noticed suspicious activity on my account over the weekend. It transpired that someone has taken over £6000 (!) out of my account and into another person's account.

No idea how they were able to do this and why it was able to go through, but it's left me feeling extremely shaken and was a pretty rubbish start to the week, even though I'll get it all back. So I completely sympathise with the OP.

Extremely surprised it was out of that account as it's a savings account and I never use my debit card for that account.
