If Americans want to say Twat they should say it properly.

There is a very irritating trend in US TV where an actor will use "twat" as an insult, but pronounce it "twot" ... it is painful and I need it to stop.

Isn't 'twot' a different word entirely?

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/11/2015 11:12

I've noticed 'twot' too. They also pronounce kebab as 'kebob'.

HolgerDanske · 25/11/2015 11:15

I know! I actually feel ill when I hear it pronounced that way. And I'm not even British...

whatdoIget · 25/11/2015 11:16

My ds has a habit of using American pronouncuations. He says "hollelujoh"for example Hmm
Not that we're at all religious, but it does seem to be something he says quite often for some reason Confused

And schnapps is 'schnopps'.

IsYourNameMichaelDiamond · 25/11/2015 11:18

I remember Emma Stone said it in 'Easy A' and I didn't get why the teachers and her parents were so shocked as 'twot' isn't a word.
It took me ages to realise what she was meant to have said.
To me twot is the same as twit but twat is the insult (although I also use it to mean 'to hit'...)

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/11/2015 11:21

I wonder why it is, their 'a' sound is normally quite flat.

raviolidreaming · 25/11/2015 11:21

I thought so too, catfordbetty.

HolgerDanske · 25/11/2015 11:24

Oh maybe it is. I have no idea. But it's still such an ugly sounding word, it just sounds wrong!

BertieBotts · 25/11/2015 11:28

Their a sound is more like aya to a British ear. It's their o sound which is flat. Sounds like u/a to a British ear. Hence all childrens toys which talk about a "fox" encourage toddlers to accidentally swear Grin

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/11/2015 11:33

So it should be tw-aya-t.

Plonkysaurus · 25/11/2015 11:35

And they eat posta.

ifgrandmahadawilly · 25/11/2015 11:37

Yanbu.

The creg / craig thing drives me insane too.

and saying may-gun instead of megan.

And 'erbs instead of herbs.

Just talk tidy ffs!

Tiggeryoubastard · 25/11/2015 11:38

Urbz instead of herbs grates on me. Just sounds really pretentious and twotty err twatty. Grin

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/11/2015 11:39

I spent weeks of The Mentalist convinced the character was called Greg Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/11/2015 11:39

Gram instead of Graham.

Gram. Ffs.

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/11/2015 11:40

I suppose the 'erb thing is a French pronunciation. They also pronounce fillet steak the French way too.

raviolidreaming · 25/11/2015 11:41

Google says that the American spelling is 'twot' - so it would be weird if they pronounced it with an 'a'.

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/11/2015 11:44

I don't think it is spelt 'twot' though. Google seems confused.

SleepIsForTheWeakAnyway · 25/11/2015 11:45

It's oregano and aluminium that get me. The American pronunciation of these are so far away from the spellings

OnlyLovers · 25/11/2015 11:46

They also pronounce kebab as 'kebob'.

What fresh hell is this?!?

Parsta instead of pasta fucks me off too.

MuttonWasAGoose · 25/11/2015 11:46

Oh for fucks sake.

Vowel pronunciation is down to accent. There's no "proper" way to say these things.

And whenever someone starts moaning about something that should be done "properly" I envision a pursed-lipped provincial little old lady.

LittleMissAIBU · 25/11/2015 11:47

Yes the Craig thing really irritates me! Especially as the kids like watching Sanjay and Craig, I have been known to shout at the tv it's Craig not creg Blush

MitzyLeFrouf · 25/11/2015 11:47

All well and good but in this case of 'twat' the twot pronunciation goes against the American accent.
