I bought a £20 giftcard online and I've received 2 of them but only paid once. Its not for a shop its for the cinema. I've been checking my bank account for the past few days to make sure I definitely was only charged once. Wwyd? Keep the second one or tell the cinema?

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 24/11/2015 16:11

blimey...where are you ordering them from?? I'd like a cinema freebie too

Do tell us OP!

OhPillocks · 24/11/2015 16:16

I literally just called waitrose about a random item that got delivered with my home delivery order and they thanked me for my call and told me to keep the item. Grin it's a bit of a random item but one that will come in useful. I always call in situations like this. It wouldn't cross my mind not too.

I've been given things by Amazon a couple of times due to them messing up orders.

specialsubject · 24/11/2015 16:18

'most people' would therefore be thieves. It's not yours unless it is given to you or you pay for it. This is not rocket science.

if the OP rings up and the company says 'don't bother, it's yours' then it is a gift. Otherwise it is not hers.

Stealing from businesses is still stealing.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 24/11/2015 16:20

Honestly, some people on here really do go out their way to find a problem. Companies send out doublers of things all the time giraffe. Perhaps stop looking for problems where there aren't any, eh?

OnlyLovers · 24/11/2015 16:20

I got sent the wrong thing from a website a little while ago and they sent the right one out next-day delivery and told me to keep the wrong one (I had offered to return it).

Am I being dim about this other thread – the usernames are different, no?

Yseulte · 24/11/2015 16:25

You could have just made that up though

Yeah of course I did.

OhPillocks that reminds me that I ordered a couple of t-shirts at the very end of the John Lewis sale and I didn't like them. When I rang up they didn't want them back. But I didn't want them either, nor did I know anyone who would, and I couldn't be bothered to take them to a charity shop on JL's account. So I tried to persuade them to take them back and they still wouldn't!

Ah, I see, Giraffe. Sorry, it's just that someone else mentions trolling and I think I conflated the two and thought that's what you were suggesting.

AutumnLeavesArePretty · 24/11/2015 16:30

Not sure what the dilemma is, it's theft to keep it so a call is needed.

Presumably you wanted all the dishonest people to post saying keep it.

I got sent two air-hog helicopters last year - I kept the second one because I knew that they were basically crap, and it would break really easily (within the week) so I saved them postage and replaced it with the one I already had.

RainbowBodyDouble · 24/11/2015 16:38

Keeping something that doesn't belong to you is stealing.
Theft by finding.

It's the same law applies for a stuffed wallet or a kitkat chunky Grin

Ring them it's hassle if you gift the card and it ends up being empty and you used the full one.

Personally (I buy far too much online) I only apply my morals for independent sellers or responsible outfits.

If Amazon sent me two items I wouldn't bother but when ikea sent me 15 of their large carriers in an order instead of 1 I called and they said just keep 'em.

DeoGratias · 24/11/2015 16:42

I have always told people when this happens. Sometimes the company says keep it because it is more expensive for them to do the admin to take a return.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/11/2015 16:43

I would contact the company and let them know - it is the honest thing to do.

I have had things I haven't ordered included in my online supermarket shop, and have always rung them. Mostly they have told me to keep the items, but occasionally they send the driver back for them (most recent time that happened it was 2 bottles of really nice wine, last Christmas Sad) - I was sad not to get told to keep the wine, but I know my conscience would really bother me if I hadn't done the right thing, and that matters more, to me.

Fwiw, keeping something you have not paid for is dishonest. You didn't set out to steal something, but once you know you have something you have not paid for, you have a decision to make - you have to decide to be honest or dishonest.

And it is not a victimless crime. Retailers and companies build a bit into their pricing structure to cover loss from theft, breakage, etc - it is the customer that pays that, not the company or the shareholders. Every pound you spend in a shop includes a percentage to pay for things other people have stolen, either shoplifting, theft or people who realise they have something they have not paid for, but don't own up and offer to pay. I don't know about you all, but I would rather not pay more for the things I want/need so other people can be dishonest.

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 24/11/2015 16:55

Once, years ago, I'd ordered some items from Lush (before they were many shops) and I was sent a huge box full of things I hadn't ordered. I rang them to let them know that, while all the items were lovely, I hadn't ordered them all. Because I'd phoned, they let me choose a couple of the other items and asked me if I'd mind returning the rest via the post office.

Maybe they'll do something similar?

Verbena37 · 24/11/2015 16:58

Are you sure that they haven't given you two £10 cards?

Gazelda · 24/11/2015 17:18

I would call them and explain the situation. No moral dilemma at all - you either do the moral or the immoral thing.

lizzydrippingsghost · 24/11/2015 18:45

use the bloody ticket and if it makes you feel better buy some popcorn from the cinema now thats what you call fucking robbery

myusernamewastaken · 24/11/2015 19:27

I'd keep it...the cinema is an extortionate price these days....my mum always used to say 'Never look a gift horse in the mouth'.....and i would feel no guilt whatsoever !!!

SummerNights1986 · 24/11/2015 20:21

I think your conscience will eat away at you op. Send them to me, i'll return them for you. My good deed for the day Grin

You will get ripped to shreds on here op. But in all honesty, I would keep them. As would most, probably...but mn is not generally representative of real life.

Brioche201 · 24/11/2015 20:40

It actually is yours to keep!If you are sent unsolicited goods through the post, they are yours.Otherwise companies would be sending us stuff all the time and expecting us to return or pay!

MammaTJ · 24/11/2015 20:44

It's the same law applies for a stuffed wallet or a kitkat chunky

No Rainbow let me keep the kitkat chunky!

AdjustableWench · 25/11/2015 00:09

I would call or email.
I ordered a pair of socks from a company on Ebay last year, and they sent the wrong item, so I emailed and they sent the right item, but told me I could keep the other pair.
For reasons that are still unclear to me, they also sent me a trolley wheel - the sort of wheel you'd see on a supermarket trolley. So I emailed again and they told me I could keep that too. I still have it, but I haven't found a use for it yet...
