We don't use the word cunt in America. It would be in shockingly poor taste, like yelling "fuck" in the middle of church.

MNer's tend to give advice that doesn't really translate well to having to live harmoniously with a group of people.

It's all well and good to say "If you don't want to go to your boss's dinner, don't go" but you can't expect a promotion later if you don't put the effort in to network.

Most advice disregards other people's feelings, when IRL you need to actually take them into consideration.

TheFallenMadonna · 21/11/2015 20:49

I think in my decade on MN I have only ever seen spa days mentioned on threads like this. Perhaps I'm on the wrong threads. I quite like a massage.

ThatsNiceDear · 21/11/2015 21:00

BertrandRussel If it's good enough for Germaine Greer, it's good enough for me. Self hatred my arse. It's an excellent, expressive and powerful word. It should be used as much as possible imo.

hefzi · 21/11/2015 21:17

Sorry yes, NCing is really popular on here: I get why people suggest it, but my mother went NC with her family in my childhood, for around 25 years. It left me with the not-entirely-rational belief that if I did something to displease my parents, they would cut me out of their lives - 30 years later, I still struggle to rein in my people-pleasing tendencies and chronic fear of abandonment. TBF, it was exacerbated somewhat when many year later, she also insisted my father went NC with his DSis for a few years, over my aunt's failure to prevent one of her (adult) children from doing something. Talk about reinforcing the message Sad

On a happier note, I genuinely don't know anyone who doesn't have a loo brush. Those posters who are anti-loo brush: do you leave one (pristine, of course) out for appearances? Or for when guests might need to clear up after themselves? (These are genuine questions, btw! Parking twats, cunt usage and LTB I completely identify with, but loo brush hatred leaves me Confused)

GoodtoBetter · 21/11/2015 21:28

Maybe you get the impression that being no contact with family is popular here as on-line is one of the few places where people feel they can talk about it. Hardly anyone IRL knows I haven't spoken to my mother in over a year as it's a bit of a taboo and then I'd have to explain all the ways she was so awful to me that we are in the psoition that it is better for my mental health if we don't have any contact. I'd rather not really, so here I can talk about it with people who get it and it lightens the load a little.
It's not like people hear about it and go "oh yes, I'll cut my family out, that sounds like a good wheeze".

Laquitar · 21/11/2015 21:32

I am one of those loo brush haters and i know people from your list.

I agree more with Goodnight's list @ 17.12. Everybody hear seems to have such control and never get angry, swear, raise a voice. I imagine them whispering quitely at each other.
The people i know in rl all do get angry some times.

reni2 · 21/11/2015 21:36

Laquitar do you keep a show loo brush or would visiting nosy buggers friends who checked really not find one? I think if loobrush hating was big in my RL, I'd have a secret one.

SalemSaberhagen · 21/11/2015 21:40

Nobody here ever seems to eat white, pre sliced supermarket bread. People are always so disdainful of it on threads, I like a Warburton's loaf Blush so does everyone else I know in real life!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 21/11/2015 21:42

I do

FrancesOldhamKelsey · 21/11/2015 21:42

I know a benefit cheat. Uni mate used to claim that her boyfriend was her landlord and that she was paying him rent so she could claim HB. She was quite proud of her cleverness and I was v young and naive and didn't really clock that it was morally wrong (I wasn't paying taxes at that point so had no skin in the game). Lovely and very middle class woman.

The others, not so much.

SalemSaberhagen · 21/11/2015 21:44

And there are the people who give advice they would never actually take themselves.

'My colleague text me asking for a lift tomorrow. I gave her one last month and she was 5 minutes late. What should I do?'

'I would text back telling her you have no place for timewasters in your life. Then I would send her a PDF of the local bus timetable'. NO YOU WOULDN'T!

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2015 21:48

I cannot get my head round women using "cunt" as an insult or as a word to describe something really bad. The internalised self hatred is shocking.

See now for me, that ^^ is a perfect example of MN being a parallel universe.

'Internalised self hatred' really?? Grin

Cunt
Dick
Fanny
Arse
Cock
Prick
Arse hole
Tit

All body parts - all used as insults.

Topseyt · 21/11/2015 21:50

Loo brushes rule. OK!!

Wonder if spas have loo brushes.

Laquitar · 21/11/2015 22:08

Reni2
i don't have any brush for the guests either. I do have bleach next to the toilet.

Baconyum · 22/11/2015 07:26

Loo brush hating - I have one I also have ocd if I didn't have one how the hell would I clean my loo? With hands? Envy boak
C**t using - yes - Scotland swearing is part of the culture Grin
LTB for breathing - possibly not, but will call him a cunt and threaten to set male members of family on him!
Call the police for anything - again - Scotland we're usually pretty up for dealing with twats ourselves.
MIL loathing - yes but not to their faces.
FB boasting - unfortunately yes
Benefit cheating - no
Inconsiderate parking twats - yes - see point about calling polis though. There's usually some ahem amusing ways they are dealt with!

SorryCantBeArsed · 22/11/2015 07:48

Bacon, the only way I know how to clean the loo is a good squirt of bleach and a scrub round with the brush, under the rim and as far down the pan as I can get. That is why brushes were invented for cleaning. Can't think of any other way Confused. Like you , I'm not using my hands Shock

Tabsicle · 22/11/2015 07:59

I use cunt.

I probably brag on FB.

MiL is lovely though.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2015 08:13

"All body parts - all used as insults."

And if you want to reach for the one to describe the worst possible type of person, you use "cunt".

There is a huge difference between using cunt to mean, well, your cunt qua Germaine, and using it to describe your aggressive, abusive, violent ex-husband. And no, cock or dick are not the same.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2015 08:28

And actually you wouldn't use cock or dick to describe your aggressive, abusive violent ex husband- because they aren't bad enough

mrsjanedoe · 22/11/2015 08:44

English is such a rich language, I never understand the need for swearing so much on this forum. The words lose their violence when they are constantly repeating, but frankly I don't really care. I just understand better the language used by young kids in London (where I hear them, I am sure they are everywhere).

Loo brush? life is too short to discuss.

Benefits cheats? sadly, I know quite a few. The system is so unfair, I could weep.

DixieDarling · 22/11/2015 08:50

I use the C word, sparingly and not around people I know hate swearing.

I love a spa day! Although prefer a spa weekend...

Narp · 22/11/2015 09:03

Maybe some of these things don't arise in RL because we don't have thousands of people to talk to, and because discussions about loos brushes don't take priority in our busy lives. Also, some things are hard to raise in RL, and finally, people who have problems with their MIL are more likely to come on here to off-load than people who don't

So I'd say

  1. I have always hated loo brushes. Why would I want to look at other people's turds?
  2. I say cunt quite a lot, but not in front of the kids. I guess people swear more on here because it's a forum for adults
  3. I know people in RL who I thing probably should LTB, but I can't say it. Or they should at least recognise that what they put up with is not acceptable
  4. A few people say call the police, many don't
  5. Don't have FB. No desire to either. Can't make head-nor-tail of it
  6. Benefit cheating - no experience
  7. Inconsiderate parking twats. See it every day

Sorry, this isn't very lighthearted

IwishIwasinNewYork · 22/11/2015 11:09

Been on MN since 2008.

MN is full of intelligent, funny people and has taught me loads, educated me on things I was shocking naive or stupid about.

But yes it really is a parallel universe in many ways!

YY to all the posters saying if we conversed or responded to people in our lives the way many MNetters suggest, we would be living in a world of tumble weeds where no-one would ever speak to us!

'No is a complete sentence'

Uh yes, maybe. But it's also fecking rude!

'Can you give my kid a lift to school?'

'No'

'Ok well fuck you, you rude bitch!'

Of your list of what I've seen in RL:

Loo brush hating - NOPE NEVER HEARD OF THIS IN RL
C**t using - USE IT ALL THE TIME, TOP SWEAR WORD
LTB for breathing - IN RL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO HOLD A MARRIAGE TOGETHER. ON MN IT IS A SIN TO 'STAY TOGETHER FOR THE KIDS'. IN REAL LIFE, EVERYBODY STAYS TOGETHER FOR THE KIDS (UNLESS THINGS BECOME SERIOUSLY UNTENABLE)
Call the police for anything - NOPE NEVER
MIL loathing - NOT AS MUCH AS ON HERE! I LOVE MY MIL THOUGH SHE IS A BIT OF A SLY COW WHO LIKES TO CRITICISE ME!
FB boasting - OF COURSE!
Benefit cheating - OF COURSE!
Inconsiderate parking twats - OF COURSE

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2015 12:55

I think it actually is a parallel universe because generally in real life the people we spend most time with are likely to broadly agree with in most things. So we go on a thread- the people who agree with us do. Just like really life. But not like real life there are loads of people who don't agree with us too. And sometimes it's a shock to realise how many of them there are.

WorraLiberty · 22/11/2015 13:00

That's a fair point actually.

Aside from a few weird people I've had to work with, most of the people in my life have a fairly similar view to me on most things.

Or at least we're not polar opposites on more than a couple of things.
