to think all pets poo?

They do don't they?

My kids are desperate for a pet. Me, not so much. I've said they can have one that doesn't poo. I'm safe now, aren't I?

Rabbits are prolific pooers, but at least they eat some of it.

Chiggers · 21/11/2015 09:37

A pet rock from the beach. No feeding, cleaning up after them, no vet bills, no grooming/de-fleaing/worming etc. No messing up the house from these guys if they're left for hours on end. Perfect pets if you ask me Wink.

megletthesecond · 21/11/2015 09:42

Guinea pig poo is pretty inoffensive. Tiny, almost dry sausagey pellets.

BearsAndAngels · 21/11/2015 10:51

DS wants a sea cucumber since he stroked one at SeaWorld many years ago. They 'eat' sand, absorb the microbes and poo clean sand! I checked and our local aquarium actually can get them - I'm sure that wouldn't be too gross.

But perhaps not too interesting either as I don't think they do much other than loll around the tank.

OldGreyCat · 21/11/2015 12:31

Guinea Pigs poo SHEDLOADS - ALL THE TIME.

THEY ARE EATING AND POOING MACHINES.

Each of my GP's poos more than my large dog. Daily.

DaggerEyes · 21/11/2015 13:35

What about training the local robins to eat out of their hands, so, wild pets! If you use maggots, and gradually get closer each day, until you finally hold the maggots in your hand they can be tamed that way. Never tried it myself yet, keep meaning to!

Sallyingforth · 21/11/2015 13:51

Another vote for tarantulas. Don't keep them myself but my friend does and they are lovely creatures. Family friendly too because you can go away for a fortnight's holiday and they are happy left with a few mealworms and water.

Incidentally my friend used to be terrified of spiders until she had treatment.

Snails? They do poo but with a bit of effort you can re-use it

DD pet rock doesn't poo, pee or even move.

We have a cat that without fail uses her litter box. She does poo but easy to clean

I agree with gerbils. We had 3 (only one left now. Sad ) They don't wee or poo very much, don't need cleaning out very often, don't smell, don't bite & come out in the daytime. They are also very interesting to watch & prefer each others' company so you don't need to worry about getting them out of the cage for company.

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/11/2015 08:02

Tamagotchi?

to think all pets poo?
MeadowHay · 22/11/2015 08:47

I love my guinea pigs, but as others have said, it is simply amazing how much poo comes out of them. :O They need quite a lot of cage-cleaning compared to other pets.

cleaty · 22/11/2015 11:13

Guinea pigs are gorgeous. But they poo constantly.

CallMeExhausted · 22/11/2015 14:02

Since it is Sunday, and I have just cleaned my 2 large fish tanks, 2 bird cages, hermit crab enclosure, gecko tank and walked the dog - I can assure you all pets poo. If they eat, they poo.

As for sea cucumber - VERY high maintenance, they require a salt water aquarium, and I probably spend more actual maintenance time on my marine tank than on all other pets combined.

Another vote for feeding wild birds or a pet rock if you are not committed to proper animal care.

Seryph · 22/11/2015 17:53

Would making the kids do the clean up not work? If they aren't mature enough to pick up poo, they aren't mature enough for pets.

I second gerbils, my two were great. No biting (until one was old and ill) lasted for about five years, only need cleaning very infrequently and vaguely trainable.

I heard that girl rats are pretty clean too, and intelligent enough to be house trained. But boy ones stink so be careful!

HopefulAnxiety · 22/11/2015 20:35

What about degus and chinchillas? I just assume all fibrevores are shit factories though, but admittedly the poo isn't very offensive - there's just a lot of it.

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 22/11/2015 23:14

I'll add to the vote for giant cockroaches! They do poo, but it's small, dry and mixes in with the vermiculite, and doesn't smell.

My snails are pretty big (think fist size), and after they've binged on a corn cob or two they do mahooovie yellow poos! Grin

Mandymops · 24/11/2015 01:58

Hedgehogs use a litter tray but are nocturnal and although unbearably cute, not the best for cuddles.

Titsalinabumsquash · 24/11/2015 02:53

I have 2 Gerbils that poo in the top wire rack of their gerbilarium so it drops down onto the next shelf and down the side of the tank, it's a bastard to clean but they don't smell.
The hamster on the other hand stinks after a few days of cleaning it out.
I have 4 hens too they poo loads and stink, really, really stink.

I'd rather put bees up my bum than have cockroaches or spiders living in my house as pets

Hey OP... What about bees?! ....

I want a tortoise but DP says no after his boss told him they're hard to care for because apparently their eyes freeze in the winter and they go blind and they tunnel places to escape.

Senpai · 24/11/2015 05:59

Hermit crabs don't poo. They're also pretty hardy as long as you keep them fed and provide bigger shells for them to grow into.

And then when the kids have got fed up with the fully grown crabs you have the makings of a tasty meal!
