We were looking round the fancy new school buildings at my kids' school tonight and there was some teacher writing on a board which included the word "barbeque" [sic]

I was able dextrously to doctor the q to make it a c. I hope this was in order. I also hope the teacher notices

Also, not a typo if handwritten on a whiteboard.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/11/2015 06:28

If you're going to make "corrections" at least make sure the word you're changing is actually wrong first!

DS1 had a spelling list the other week that included the word "kimino". I know that Aussie's pronounce it differently, hence wasn't sure if they'd spelt it wrong because of the pronunciation issue, or because the meant the Japanese place of Kimino. So I asked first - sure enough, should have been kimono, was spelt wrong.

YABU and smug. I'm beginning to loathe spelling, punctuation and grammar correctors. There are bigger things to worry about.
What if it was deliberately put there for pupils to spot the mistake? Or as a way of demonstrating alternative spellings?

Tapirs · 18/11/2015 06:40

Oh dear. You've not shown yourself in the best light here OP.
don't be a twat Treat it as a learning experience and move on

bigbuttons · 18/11/2015 06:41

Split infinitive?
Op you sound like a pain in the arse.
I am a teacher, does that make any difference?

Wobblystraddle · 18/11/2015 06:41

See, this is the trouble Scrappy. I believe that it is important to aspire to high levels of literacy, but people like OP do the cause no favours Sad

CoolSummer · 18/11/2015 06:42

Oh dear, egg on your face OP.

CoolSummer · 18/11/2015 06:44

Thing is, I would (and do!) correct signs and misspellings, but in this case it wasn't actually a misspelling! I hope no one saw you - I am cringing on your behalf!

molyholy · 18/11/2015 06:48

A pp said you sound like a dick. I tend to agree. Ywb a dick.

Narp · 18/11/2015 06:48

I am a TA and a parent corrected my spelling of the verb 'practise' in a Homework book. She changed it to the noun 'practice.

I was then left wondering if I should then red-pen her back, but restrained myself. She probably still thinks she's in the right but I kept my dignity

Check you are right before doing this, OP.

SarahSavesTheDay · 18/11/2015 06:49

just wondering whether I should have messed with the teacher's work...

No, because it wasn't wrong.

I don't like your use of 'messed with' instead of 'changed', while we're at it.

Groovee · 18/11/2015 06:50

How would you feel if some other teacher did the same to your work/classroom?

Bostin · 18/11/2015 06:51

Strewth. It's Barbie. YWBU.

TwoSmellyDogs · 18/11/2015 06:58

Silly OP. I presume you have a smartphone or access to the internet? Then This would have taken you all of a couple of minutes and you would not now be looking like a bit of a twat!

Gabilan · 18/11/2015 07:16

Handy that you won't discuss the spelling, since you're wrong. YWBU.

Only1scoop · 18/11/2015 07:16

I would have had a chuckle behind your silly back.

Made yourself look a tad stoopid.

StuffandBother · 18/11/2015 07:22

Oops, as my teenagers would say you just got 'owned'!! BlushBlush

MaisieDotes · 18/11/2015 07:29

It wasn't a "typo". It wasn't even an error as others have said.

I am not open to a debate at all on the spelling

This isn't your class Hmm

justgoandgetalife · 18/11/2015 07:32

My Dad is pedantic in the extreme, but even he would not dream of touching a teacher's classroom as he has the utmost respect for the profession.

However, he would be quite likely to take the teacher to one side & politely & with a Cheshire Cat grin on his face, inform said teacher of their error.

ptumbi · 18/11/2015 07:32

There was no split infinitive. 'dextrously to doctor' is not splitting the infinitive - 'to dextrously doctor' would have been more usual (but grammatically wrong) and splitting the infinitive.

In DC school there are often spelling mistakes and bad grammar on the whiteboard. It's so the DC can correct them both.

DD is 6 so it's simple things like no capital letter or no full stop.

How did you know it wasn't part of a lesson plan

justgoandgetalife · 18/11/2015 07:35

...BBQ?

CoolSummer · 18/11/2015 07:36

Narp I would say you have a duty to change it back actually! Else the student won't realise what's in the book is incorrect.
