Have I been daft? A wwyd

Afishytale · 12/11/2015 13:50

I'm not sure I've been daft or I'm being daft.

I bought some fish from a door to door salesman earlier. I've seen fish vans around occasionally, not these people before.

I've googled the company, nothing comes up. Their website doesn't exist, google can't find their phone number, company or mobile. Nothing.

Have I been caught by people trying to make some quick money? I didn't pay by card (although they said I could), I paid by cheque and feel stupid as they said they'd stamp it. Should I cancel it?

I feel like I've been stupid (having an ill, non sleeping dc doesn't help me think straight at the minute).

Or am I over thinking it? Wwyd?

I cod have believed this story, but salmon doesn't add up. Rocked a boring afternoon though!

So, you don't usually buy anything on the doorstep. You bought a fish. A live fish. And paid by cheque. Seriously, who does that?

In essence it was C.O.D. swallop

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 12/11/2015 14:25

I've always said no in the past (we get them every now and then, different ones) but relented last year and bought some fish on the spur of the moment, exactly the same situation, a year or two back. I googled the company name afterwards and found no website, but various online reviews saying it was expensive for what it was. No suggestion of fraudsters or anything though. I hadn't thought it too pricey, the fish turned out to be good quality, but I didn't buy from them again as I don't really have the freezer space for bulk quantities. They stopped ringing me after I said I wanted to be taken off their list.

spiderlight · 12/11/2015 14:26

Is this you, OP?

Afishytale · 12/11/2015 14:30

I didn't buy a live fish!

They are very clearly dead and filleted.

I concern was that all the details on their business card including their website don't exist.

So have I either bought stolen fish or can they scam my money based on me giving them a cheque? (Yes I've no idea as who pays by cheque these days?).

"It's swimming around, the kids like it but I've told them it's for their tea so not to get too attached."

Followed by

"They are very clearly dead and filleted."

Confused

you have almost certainly been scammed by paying more for a load of pollocks. There isn't much they can do with your bank account number and name.

We sometimes get them here and they drive to London from Newcastle and sell not very good fish at ridiculous prices!

Unlike my lovely fish man from Hull who comes round in his van every week and sells only the best quality fish.

scribblegirl · 12/11/2015 14:48

For god's hake, not another one of these threads Wink

firesidechat · 12/11/2015 14:49

No they can't scam you from the info on a cheque, so relax about that.

Eating the fish is a whole other matter though Shock.

Afishytale · 12/11/2015 14:55

I was joking about it swimming around! Obviously that didn't come across.

All I wanted to know was they can't scam me from a cheque. If it's poor quality, oh well it'll make a fish pie.

It was very obvious you were joking about the swimming around! Come on people!

LocalEditorLancashire · 12/11/2015 15:08

we have had warnings recently about door to door fish sellers, do you have a card receipt for how much you paid? I hope it's not the case but there is more information here www.stayintheknow.co.uk/da/128598/Consumer_Alerts_-_Trading_Standards.html

LocalEditorLancashire · 12/11/2015 15:08

Just saw you paid by cheque I'll stop worrying!

Teasgonecoldagain · 12/11/2015 15:18

Oh dear I must be tired, from the original post I did imagine a goldfish swimming around in a bag and thought how strange, people going door to door selling goldfish and I've never seen one of these goldfish vans!

shovetheholly · 12/11/2015 15:27

I think it's really unlikely that this isn't legit (am surprised they even accepted a cheque), but I would get in touch with your bank. Cheques can be tampered with or copied, and if you've given them a heads up, it will be easier to sort out should anything go wrong. I would do so straight away if you guaranteed the cheque by writing your card number on the back.

Gatekeeper · 12/11/2015 15:35

we have a legit fish van- been selling for donkeys years- and occasionally a white van come round with a load of rogues inside (about 5-6) who go knocking at doors and trying to sell 'lovely fish darlin'....straight from Shields' etc etc. It is either nicked or not for human consumption

Twitterqueen · 12/11/2015 16:15

Hijack....

Does anyone remember the vans that sold/distributed the most delicious orange juice ever in the world? I was milk intolerant as a child and I'm sure I remember either some kind of NHS van that had - to me - the most delicious drink ever in the whole world.
