So today I got a visit from a charity fundraiser. He was working for a charity that I would like to support. I was just about to leave and asked him to come back later. He did and I signed all forms etc....then at the end he asked if he could use my phone to make a confirmation call. I asked him why he had to do this and he tried to explain but he was a bit waffly. Again I was in a bit of a hurry and just let him do it. It was an 020 number...

Does anyone know why he had to make a call? I was panicking that he was going to phone a premium line so I got OH to show him where phone was and watch who he was calling.

Jess think blue meant that the people on the phone are solely based on getting more money and often don't appreciate or even understand the charity they work for. It's disheartening.

Yeah.. you're going to be screening your calls for a bit.

blueflavourpandapops Did you mean bone marrow donor rather than financial donor?

wasonthelist · 12/11/2015 09:26

Op yabu for signing up via any chugger. If no-one did this, they'd stop chugging. As someone else points out, this gives money to chugging co not so much to the charity.

I don't answer my door to people I don't known or I'm not Expecting, saves lots of problems.

Sorry that post wasn't very clear, I explained that I wasn't able to donate any more money but I would be interested in becoming a bone marrow doner. Came away feeling a bit fobbed off as I had assumed they would be able to set the wheels in motion as it were to become one.
When I worked for this particular company I couldnt help but notice a few things. 1. All the team leaders(there was lots) had company I phones, the best one on the market at the time.

  1. There staff socials always included £1000 bar tabs.
Which would have almost definitely come out of money gained through sign ups.

I'll aak them to take me off any marketing lists

Yeah. Good luck with that. Grin

Thanks for all the advice folks and for all the YABU for signing up with chuggers - you are all totally right. Had a moment of madness thinking I was doing good and the more I thought about it last night the more I realised what a total tit I'd been.

I called today and cancelled. I also asked about the weird phone call. So according to their call centre they have had people complaining about fundraisers using their own phones to discuss private customer information (bank details etc) because they either don't know exactly who is on the end of the line or they don't believe that the line is entirely secure and they felt customers would be more comfortable if their own phones were used.

Hmm

Like I said it's totally cancelled and I asked if they would remove my name and e-mail address from database, so we'll see. I reckon Watchers right and I'm on to plums with that, but I have no problem hanging up or I can always just get my five year old to chat to them -he looooooooves talking on the phone Wink

OH and I are going to be sitting down tonight and setting up a couple of dd directly with the charities we want to support.

Hooray! Good result OP.

Could I recommend payroll giving, if it's an option for either of you? It comes off your pay pre-tax so the charity gets more, automatically, rather than having to claim the tax back through the gift aid process.
