'Good girl'

BalaRua · 10/11/2015 18:11

My mum, step dad and dad all call me a 'good girl' all the time. For no reason.

Eg: mum: how are you?
Me: fine thanks
Mum: good girl

This so annoys me. I'm youngish but I'm married with a child! Is this unreasonable of me to hate it? Is there a polite way to make them stop?

"Bark at them and nip their ankles."

I'm still classed as a kid in my parents' eyes.

Me, my brother, DP, DSiL (age range 43 - 52) are "the Kids".

DS & DNs are "the Littlies" or "the Dinkies".

NigelLikesSalad · 10/11/2015 20:21

My personal trainer said it to me during a session. [Blush] I'm 33. He was 24. and beautiful.

NigelLikesSalad · 10/11/2015 20:21

massive emoji fail.

AgeingArtemis · 10/11/2015 20:49

My dad told me, completely non-ironically/sarcastically "you're a big girl now" Hmm

Yes I am young and I would have ignored "girl" on it's own, but "big girl"?? wtf?

reni2 · 10/11/2015 20:53

Oh my, haven't you grown, Artemis!

feckitall · 10/11/2015 20:55

As long as they don't spit into a hanky and clean your face as well...Grin

reni2 · 10/11/2015 20:58

My mum does actually pick fluff off my clothes or rights a wonky collar Blush. I am over 40.

Oliversmumsarmy · 10/11/2015 21:03

Maybe I am missing something, how does being fine equate to you being a good girl? You could have done something evil and still be fine. You definitely wouldn't have been described as good girl.

Or maybe i am just a bit thick

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 10/11/2015 21:10

After all good woman would be wierd

Not at all. Where I am "good woman, yourself" would be a very common thing to hear. It's a compliment.

BalaRua · 10/11/2015 22:11

Oliver, well quite. I've no idea why that makes me a good girl. It's fairly dismissive but must be meant nicely.

celtictoast · 10/11/2015 22:14

I'd be quite happy to be called a good woman!

BalaRua · 10/11/2015 22:19

Think I would too! Grin

My dad held out his hand to me as we were crossing the road. I pointed out that it was ok, there was no traffic and being over 40, I have mastered the art of crossing the road.Grin

I think there are just some habits that are hard to break with your offspring, regardless of how old they are.

scatterthenuns · 10/11/2015 22:31

I do this to DH. 'I've put the dishwasher on' - 'Oh, good boy'.

It is only because I spend so much time around dogs and children. I wouldn't over think it.

StarkyTheDirewolf · 10/11/2015 23:45

As long as they don't spit into a hanky and clean your face as well.

My dm actually did this to me the other day, I'm nearly 30, I looked at her like Hmm and she looked me straight back in the eye and just went "not sorry" in a completely defiant manner. Grin

Dh calls me good girl, "you okay good girl" it's a term of endearment in our house. He calls me lovely girl and beautiful girl too I am both lovely and beautiful obviously Grin

HoneyDragon · 11/11/2015 00:08

I say good girl, and top woman as endearments to adult women.

I've not been berated yet. but this is Mnet now so it's inevitable I will be

TheHouseOnTheLane · 11/11/2015 06:06

My Mum began making an effort to not say "Good girl" when I was about 13....it turned into "Good....thing."

So whenever I did something well I got "Good thing."

Grin
Senpai · 11/11/2015 06:07

"Good girl" is what you say to dogs, not people. Maybe they're subtly calling you a bitch?

Enjolrass · 11/11/2015 06:58

I think it's slightly different when it's your parents and it's a habit.

And yes your kids are always your kids.

Unless they treat you like a child in other ways it wouldn't bother me.

My dad always says 'how's my my girl?' To me on the phone and 'how's my boy?' To my brother.

He knows we are both adults, married with children and our own homes.

We are in our 30s. And I know that when's dads gone it will be one of the things I miss.

feckitall · 11/11/2015 08:47

starky Grin

Nataleejah · 11/11/2015 10:34

We say that to our cat all the time after she has been to her tray

WorraLiberty · 11/11/2015 11:06

My neighbour (mid 70s) is an old school cockney gent and he always says this. I find it quite comforting really from him, but certainly wouldn't from my boss for example.

Him: "Alright flower"?

Me: "Yeah, fine thanks"

Him: "Good girl"

It makes me wonder if I wasn't fine, would he call me a bad girl? Grin

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 11/11/2015 11:31

A customer at work says this to me.

Him "20 B&H please"

Me "that's £9.60 please"

Him "Ah good girl"

Confused

I always have the urge to start panting and wait for a bone.

Gottagetmoving · 11/11/2015 11:37

Its just a habit. I think it is nice. I would prefer that to the disinterest my mother showed me.
