I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, put on meds and told to eat low fat, low carb, low salt, lo w sugar and to lose three stone. What in God's name should I eat on a daily basis other than veg?

Yes it is. Shops own PB has palm oil in it and sunpat doesn't. Palm oil is nasty stuff and in so much food it's very hard to avoid.

Proper peanut butter doesn't have a big list of ingredients and is better for you than that horrible highly fattening palm oil.

I can't stand the stuff and hate that it's in 50% of products.

You've reminded me actually that somebody (maybe Jamie Oliver?) makes courgette strips to use instead of pasta. I've never fancied it but needs must and all that.

I recently had butternut squash noodles. They were bloody lovely. Possibly the best I've ever tasted, although admittedly some of that will be down to what I had with them.

Look at a low GI plan.

Basically cut out all processed food, all refined sugar, alcohol.

I lost 3st doing this a few years back have since had 2 kids so am back to a heavy weight now

Also use MFP to plan what you eat.

It's all well and good saying GP should refer you to a dietician but that usually a very overstretched resource and not offered to people who could essentially work it out themselves.

I would say swap all carbs for the brown / wholemeal variety, make sure you have veg or salad with lunch and dinner (and make that the biggest portion on your plate), limit red meat and stick to poultry and fish, porridge homemade is an easy and filling breakfast, nuts are a good snack.

It's hard cutting out all the processed shit but once you do it, you won't miss it. It's addictive - same as sugar.

Courgetti with bolognese is fantastic. The trouble with all the sugar free/fat free stuff is that it isn't real food (it's what paleo followers term 'frankenfood'), it's not really enjoyable, it's not particularly nutritious. We need those two things from food and you can't fool your body with artificially low calorie imitations. Cravings for good, nutrient dense food and/or food that gives us pleasure will win in the end. There's a certain amount of retraining involved, eg to lessen a sweet tooth or recognise how tired/bloated too much bread and pasta can make us. That's the only way to make sustainable changes-if it wasn't we would all eat weight watchers food and keep off the lost weight forever Confused

Courgetti are lush with a nice tomatoe and prawn sauce or similar.

Spaghetti squash also turns into fun noodly type things.

You can do really nice 'rice' with cauliflower.
Most say don't use the stem but I like the stem grated in as gives it a bit more texture.

Eat lots of steamed fish and steamed chicken breast. Lots of veg. Think whole grain and whole food, nothing processed.

Easy as long as you are cooking for yourself and not eating out or getting take always.

Thanks all for the helpful replies. I do eat a lot of processed food in the evening so will look into cooking from scratch.

I've just started a really strict diet, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, no added sugar, no alcohol, no processed food Hmm

I've found it easier to make a list of what I can eat/drink rather than the other way round - fruit & veg, beans, pulses and nuts, brown rice & potatoes, water and herbal/fruit teas to drink.

I've just started looking at dairy and gluten alternatives, soya milk and gluten free wraps, etc.

Today I had porridge (made with water) with raisins for breakfast, avocado salad for lunch and a spicy veggie stir fry with brown rice for dinner.

This sounds similar requirements to how I eat, for different reasons however. I have a really good recipe book in pdf. If you pm me your email address I'm happy to forward it on to you, there's loads of really good, tasty, easy things in there.

Notagain were you told which type of fat to cut down on? For example you wouldn't want too much saturated fat in your diet but you do need polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega 3 and 6 for example. Telling someone to eat "low fat" is massively simplistic without giving them far more information. Besides, if you're eating processed foods many of the "low fat" varieties are stuffed full of sugar or other crap to make up the missing fat, and many have lots of hidden salt. So the best thing you can do is cook from scratch (don't even used jars of sauce) as much as possible so you know exactly what's in what you're eating.

Forgot to mention, there's a really good film about the myths of fat Vs health called Fat Head. Our lecturers recommended we watch it and it's both informative and entertaining. Well worth watching Smile
