AIBU to think DH should buy a bigger, more practical, car?

We are a family of six and obviously my car is big enough to seat all of us. DH is looking to replace his car, which is currently a four seater, and wants to replace it with a five seater.

Am I being unreasonable to suggest that it would make more practical sense to buy a car that can seat all of us as a family? He reasons that we will never be in a situation where we would all need to be in his car rather than in my car or a courtesy car if necessary.

We have done the research and the cost difference between the two different options is approximately £1,000 and the insurance cost is practically the same.

I know this is a comparatively small problem to have btw but would be interested in others opinions, especially as I really do think I am right here.

Jesus Christ I've just come back in and seen what he wants to drive. Well at least you'll never need an even bigger car again as surely you couldn't take a grown man in one of those seriously thought to have sex with!

Could have been worse I suppose - could have been a souped up corsa...

I would also be questioning his sanity.

If you want to blow your company car budget on a "nice" car FGS get something other than a focus RS.

OTheHugeManatee · 08/11/2015 20:16

Lol at any Ford Focus being 'sporty' Grin

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 08/11/2015 21:15

before you said it was an RS I was going to say YWBU but not now.

If he wanted a citroen C1 or a little fiesta it'd be different. There's certainly not going to be any fuel saving going on there is there.

Tell me he wants the big bright lime green one Grin

I was going to suggest that he should get a small engine or hybrid for tax reasons.

Rick has explained it well.

We've got a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV which is saving £'s on tax over the 4 years that we'll have it for.

Def worth thinking about.

BoomChickenSoup · 08/11/2015 21:44

I do agree with all the comments here about the RS Grin

Personally, the only advantage I see to having two large cars is that when one is in for a service, you still have transport for the kids. Otherwise, I agree with the OP's DH.

We have one large car and one small one but we don't have DC so slightly different situation.

GasLIghtShining · 08/11/2015 21:57

I understand the argument about a boy racer car but depending on where DH is driving his company car some of the suggestion maybe a bit impractical. My DH drives to all over England & Scotland. There is no way he would be doing that in a C1 even if I had a big car.

I have a small car and do mainly town running but it has a 1.6 because I want some power when I am driving out of town.

I'd pick a golf over a focus

TheCraicDealer · 08/11/2015 22:05

I agree with him that's there's no point in having two big cars- as the kids get older you'll be ferrying around one, two, three at a time rather than all together so the smaller car will be great for that. But, that Focus RA is wank. Not just because it looks like he's a wannabe boy racer trying to relive his pre-DC youth, but also due to the financial implications outlined above. Get a Golf bluemotion or something instead.

We have to have a 4 wheel drive boring work vehicle, do lots of off road stuff and towing. We also have an Impreza because we like driving a proper car! Got to have some fun in life!

TitusGibbonicus · 08/11/2015 22:19

Make him get a Golf GTI or R. The RS is a gimp's car.
