To think that the 70's and 80's smelled more?

It may sound odd....I have a very acute sense of smell and many of my memories are tied up with smells.

I can recall the most faint but specific odors....I can sort of bring them back.

THe smell of the outdoor bounds centre my class went to for two days when I was 10 in 1982. Positively VICTORIAN in it's smell.

My friend's house....shit and mince.

The hall behind the chapel....wet coats, cheap rubber and dust.

Is it just me?

I still have a strong sense of smell but scents are far more pleasant now...

Emily yes! What IS that smell? I remember that back then, chocolate bars and lolly ices weren't in sealed packs so the shops smelled of them! Remember the ends of a lolly were open?

I do that too Alice. I love my MIL but I have to wash her perfume off when we get back because I just don't smell like me!

expatinscotland · 07/11/2015 13:46

'The early 70's smelt of patchouli and Giorgio Beverley Hills, perfume-wise.'

Giorgio Beverly Hill didn't come out till 1981.

Pipestheghost · 07/11/2015 13:47

Smells of the 80's to me were Kouros, Poison, leather jackets and cigarette smoke.

ButEmilylovedhim · 07/11/2015 13:49

the houseThey were open weren't they? Maybe that was it! It was an exciting smell, wasn't it? It meant you were really on holiday. Does anyone remember the ice lollies in the shape of dracula? It was raspberry flavoured. I absolutely loved those. They've brought a lot back but not those, the meanies.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 07/11/2015 13:50

most places smelt of smoke

trains had a very distinct smell of smoke and milky nescafe coffee (that had been spilt and not cleaned) and another smell that I think may have been fuel fumes

many family/friends houses smelt of deep frying food, roast dinner, curry and smoke

some of my friends (wealthy) their houses smelt of exotic smells like garlic

TheHouseOnTheLane · 07/11/2015 13:50

Oh God yes! And minty Darliks!

I have a super sensitive snoz - and unfortunately, migraines that are triggered by smells. Hmm

I'm afraid Kouros was one of my triggers and my dsis' then boyfriend, eventual first husband, used to practically bathe in the stuff, making the whole house reek of it.

We have moved back to my childhood home and I really notice things like the smell of newly mown school fields and at this time of year, bonfires/fireworks and damp fallen leaves really brings back my own school days around here.

The beer and smoke smell from pubs is something I thought I'd never miss, until I went to a gig recently and walked in to the smell of real ale and body odour on a massive scale. Envy

Agree with Christmas trees when I was little the whole downstairs would smell of Christmas tree, these days barely any smell at all Sad

Gruntfuttock · 07/11/2015 13:57

expatinscotland "Giorgio Beverly Hill didn't come out till 1981."

Oh. Blush How very embarrassing. Thank you expat, my memory obviously isn't as good as I thought it was. I think this is a good indicator that I should either keep quiet or check my facts in future.

Blush again.

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2015 13:59

Whenever it came out Giorgio Beverley Hills is revolting.

ButEmilylovedhim · 07/11/2015 14:00

Thanks for that the house! Lovely to see those wrappers again. Amazing that they were all paper!

CassieBearRawr · 07/11/2015 14:02

Funny sparkling, I was just thinking how kouros is revolting Grin The smell of it makes me want to retch every time, I have quite a strong reaction to it!

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2015 14:03

Ooh no Kouros brings back some very specific memories for me Wink

GBH not so much.

laffymeal · 07/11/2015 14:05

Woodleigh green apple shampoo was everywhere in the late 70s, my school stank of it. Pubs smell horrible now, body odour, stale food and toilets were all masked by Marlboro et al.

Aeroflotgirl · 07/11/2015 14:06

Yanbu everything seems so clinical and sterile now. Even the fish counter at Morrisons does not smell. I remember the local hardwear shop, had this specific smell, and The local shoe shop used to have a smell too.

Gruntfuttock · 07/11/2015 14:07

"Whenever it came out Giorgio Beverley Hills is revolting."

That's a bit of an understatement. Wasn't it banned in some places?

BalloonSlayer · 07/11/2015 14:10

Victorian school buildings still smell the same. I think partly due to that stuff they put on the parquet floor. And when they cook school dinners, no matter what it is they are cooking, it always smells like shepherd's pie.

Abraid2 · 07/11/2015 14:10

Some smells were better. Diorella smelled better. Christmas trees, as said earlier.

I don't remember not washing myself as often in the eighties. Our house never smelled of food when we were growing up, but we didn't do that constant deep frying thing.

SoMuchToBits · 07/11/2015 14:14

I used to love the smell of harvest festival at school. This was in the days when many people brought in fresh fruit, veg, bread, and even flowers.

These days harvest festivals usually consist of tinned and packeted goods (health & safety) and smell of nothing.

OldGreyCat · 07/11/2015 14:14

They do say that smell is the most evocative of 'memory' senses.

Don't be embarrassed Gruntfuttock you have just 'backdated' your luffly smell. Grin

I remember the smell of fresh shortbread in the oven, cream soda pop and flowers at the house of the old lady I adopted as my Granny in the 1970's.

At school, I remember the smell of plimsolls, polish and cabbage.

At home, it was Old Spice (Grandad, died when I was 4), cooking, and flowers.

SoMuchToBits · 07/11/2015 14:16

I'm going to make my Christmas puddings this afternoon. Then my house will smell of fruit and spices and lemon zest... Smile

SoMuchToBits · 07/11/2015 14:17

My uncle and aunt's house smelled of Gold Flake tobacco, which my uncle smoked in a pipe. I loved that smell!

Gruntfuttock · 07/11/2015 14:21

Cabochard was better in the '70's. Like many perfumes it was reformulated.
