To think a soup and roll charity sale will still make as much money

I'm organising a fundraiser for a health charity in December in the uk. Really want to make the products and emphasis on health. Aibu to suggest a soup and roll sale? We have enough soup yearns for 5 different types and obviously as much space for any rolls people can bake!

Our Church used to do something similar once a month but always lunch time

12-2pm 3 different homemade soups a roll with butter then a choice of pudding with tea/coffee/squash for kids most people donate on average £5 used to raise over a £1000 each time

you need enough seats and bowls/ cups chunky soup needs spoons, people donate more if they can sit and blether

soup will really only work at lunchtime and you just soup and roll would expect about £2 if standing takeaway a bit more if seating

in mid morning or mid afternoon really does need to be tea/coffee and cakes to get maximum funds I would not want soup at 10.30 or at 3pm

I am not sure but if for charity and homemade I think it has to be suggested donations rather than fixed price it's not a cafe; something to do with charity rules not being as tight as cafe rules

Because of the timing I think a lot depends on whether people will know in advance, I can imagine someone preparing food for after they have taken children swimming or playing football or whatever who wouldn't if they knew they could get soup.

I think the book is a good idea - maybe with a sample of soup, one of the containers you get at a deli counter that would fit a couple of spoonfuls of soup with a book?

I really don't think it will make as much as a cake sale. The timing isn't great - I wouldn't want soup in an afternoon and in the evening I will have either already eaten or have something planned.

I imagine your late afternoon / early evening crowd will be made up of hungry school aged children who would kill for a cupcake, but probably not for soup (except for those children of Mumsnetters who would turn down cake for a nutricious mung bean, kale and spiced parsnip soup).

Chopped veg and dips might go down well or fruit skewers - more of a snack than a meal.

Our local MacMillan group do this each February in someone's house. They have a suggested minimum donation and the event is very popular. Committee members each make a giant pot of soup.

The recipe book is a good idea but if you only charge a pound for it you'll make hardly any money after expenses. Charge at least £4.

Likewise don't undercharge for the soup. Charge a fair commercial value for a lunch. Too often at these charity sales the price being charged is so low you might as well have just not bothered and donated the cost of ingredients plus cooking fuel to the charity.

Much better idea than boring old cakes. I love soup! Vegetarian ones please.

SkirkLass · 08/11/2015 08:32

I'd love this, brilliant idea.

pasturesgreen · 08/11/2015 08:36

Love the idea, OP! I'd happily buy a soup and roll instead of cake, especially in the run up to Christmas when we all eat too much sweets anyway!

justmyview · 08/11/2015 08:40

I would buy soup & a roll at lunch time, but not in afternoon. I wouldn't take it away, due to -

food safety if not refrigerated
risk of spilling

Might this work better in early January when people are trying to kick start healthy diet routine?

bakingaddict · 08/11/2015 08:49

If you want to do this then I'd also suggest selling some savoury tidbits like samosas bhajis those little empanadas alongside the soup and roll that way there are things people can take home to eat as well

TiggyD · 08/11/2015 08:49

Good idea.

Not sure as an event in itself, but as part of a bigger one certainly. Maybe in the evening? As part of a christmas event or maybe book a stall in the high street during the day. Selling it by the cup would be easier than bowls. Maybe a cup and a wedge of bread to dip?
