to think my neighbours think I'm stupid?

Our TV signal disappeared during the week. Tonight DH went out with a torch to investigate and discovered that the cable to our aerial has been cut, and attached to a cable going into our downstairs neighbours' flat instead. Did they think we couldn't figure it out? I have a PhD FFS.

Previous encounters include the request to phone them a taxi at 7.30am, and the unforgettable use of their living room window as a door after locking themselves out (and leaving their smashed bathroom window unrepaired for three months with just a bit of cardboard in the way. They live in the ground floor). And of course the time my DH had to go down to find out why their smoke alarm had been going off for ages, to find their keys in the door, the door open and the inhabitants passed out drunk.

OP, you have access to your neighbours' TV cable, couldn't you use your scientific knowledge to blow up their TV?

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 07/11/2015 17:15

A few years ago, our neighbours had a bike nicked from the front of their house (it was chained up).

The culprit hadn't thought about the fact that there was snow on the ground and our neighbour simply followed the tracks, walked right up to their house and took it back.

Idiots.

Pancakeflipper · 07/11/2015 17:21

That's Grin Raptor.

OP - it's your neighbours who are stupid.

SurlyCue · 07/11/2015 17:24

But do the neighbours know this? Unless you forwarned them when they moved in that you have a PhD (dont ya know Wink) then they cant really be blamed for thinking they could steal your tv signal. I'm pretty sure its your fault for not mentioning the PhD upfront.

CrystalQueen "Previous encounters include the request to phone them a taxi at 7.30am,"

they asked you to book them a taxi...please tell us more about this!

people like this are often relying on the fact that others won't be strong enough to do anything about their behaviour. The cable thing is stealing so I would be reporting it. Do they rent or own?

SistersOfPercy · 07/11/2015 17:34

I have a BA Hons.
Big Arse Honestly.
Grin

Youarentkiddingme · 07/11/2015 17:35

I don't think your neighbours think you are stupid.

I just don't think they think Grin

YY to contacting cable co or police. It's theft pure and simple.

amarmai · 07/11/2015 17:41

do not move op. This has the potential to become a mum's net classic. KEEP US UPDATED!

sugar21 · 07/11/2015 17:41

Grin ok so now its dark nip outside and cut their cable.
Not rocket science

I assume it has to be the correct cable to cable join to ensure the signal remains intact and a rough connection just wouldnt work - or would it?

I would contact the cable company and tell them you have suddenly lost your signal. they will send an engineer to investigate. You dont have to get involved in the discovery and/or police being called.

CanadianJohn · 07/11/2015 18:11

If it is a coaxial cable, you can buy a “coaxial cable cutter” for a couple of dollars. Much cheaper than paying for cable. Why didn't I think of that, my neighbours have a huge satellite dish...

BMW6 · 07/11/2015 18:20

If this is real I'd be straight on the phone to 101.........

ImperialBlether · 07/11/2015 18:26

I've only got an MA and I would've been really confused at this.

BusShelter · 07/11/2015 20:16

Time to change your wireless name to FuckOff&Pay4YourOwnTV

paulapompom · 07/11/2015 20:21

If I had a Ph.D I would tell everyone I ever met. I would have cards printed with "Dr Pom Ph.D" and force them into people's hands.

I don't have one Sad and I have missed the point of the thread

DaggerEyes · 07/11/2015 20:26

I got a PhD. Well....my neighbor got one, but I tippexed her name out and wrote mine on it. Do you think she'll notice??

Crazybaglady · 07/11/2015 20:34

imperial ive only got 3 diplomas and a handful of GCSEs so I dont understand this at all Sad

myotherusernameisbetter · 07/11/2015 20:39

Hmm, if they've badly connected the cable then water might accidentally get down the cable and fuck up their telly. Wouldn't it be simply awful if water was to get down the cable and fuck up their telly OP? Wink

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 09/11/2015 07:45

Stupid thieving bastards. I think I'd go to the police and would complain to their landlord if their renting.

almapudden · 09/11/2015 07:55

Why is everyone rinsing the OP for mentioning her PhD? It was clearly a light-hearted aside!

OP, please confront them and the report back.

Fluffyears · 09/11/2015 08:56

Pom me too in fact I'd write it in my Christmas cards and insist service providers refer to me as Dr on the telephone. My brother has a PhD.

Fratelli · 09/11/2015 12:58

Just because you have a phd doesn't mean you have common sense etc!

That aside, the were totally unreasonable! Knobs!

LagunaBubbles · 09/11/2015 13:02

Agree with this!

Scremersford · 09/11/2015 13:12

Clearly the OP should post back that she has gone to her neighbours and said the following "I know you have cut my tv cable and committed criminal damage, but I inadvertently mentioned (in a thruway remark due to trying to inject some levity into quite a surprising situation) mentioned that I have phd. Therefore this means I have no common sense or judgement, so feel free to steal the service I am paying for. And have a nice day!"
