To wonder why the fuck anyone would want to go to Sharm El Shek anyway?

Just that really.

That part of the world is incrediably volatile at the moment, even more so since the terrorist attack in Tunisia. The foreign office advised against travelling there after that. I've always wanted to go to and see the pyramids but accept its not going to happen for the foreseeable future, it's not worth the risk . Now this terrible incident with the plane, clearly there is intelligence telling the government that it's just not safe to fly to or from there at the moment.

Aside from that, I've known loads of people who've been there and none have liked it. Huge purpose built resorts with gates and armed guards on them?! No thanks! I'd never be able to relax.

If you want some winter sun what's wrong with the good old Canaries?

Madeira isn't one of the Canary Islands.

chickindude · 06/11/2015 22:04

I went to Dahab 25 years ag & there were no hotels, just straw huts. Had a wonderful time. Things change, I wouldn't go back

TalkinPeas · 06/11/2015 22:05

Shehas
Inshallah
What is written is written
If it is your day to die, nothing will change that
If it is not your day to die you will live
Muslims do not believe in free will
so security checks make no difference

Arrow
Sinai is a god forbidden arse end area
none of those people would live there were it not for the tourists

and they were - in front of cameras this morning - taking cash bribes to bypass security
because
inshallah
if its OK its OK
if not, tough

SplatterMustard · 06/11/2015 22:11

I'd never go there, it's just not my kind of thing. We prefer places that aren't your run of the mill holiday - we're off to Sweden for Xmas to visit family, next year we're going to Finland in August.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/11/2015 22:12

Muslims do not believe in free will Yep. Not one of the 1.57 Muslim people in the world believes in free will.

flixybelle · 06/11/2015 22:13

KEN: I know exactly what you mean, I feel absolutely sick every time I think about it.

The staff I spoke to said that work in the city was paid poorly and working in Sharm has meant they can provide well for their families. They earn more than many professionals I am not sure why that makes sharm a bad place. It's surely no different from people here who work on oil rigs.

Just watching the news and the British Ambassador is saying that Sharm is still not a dangerous place to holiday!

SheHasAWildHeart · 06/11/2015 22:15

TalkinPeas as a Muslim I understand what Inshallah means but I wanted to know what your sentence meant.
I'm leaving this thread now.

Absolutely.
One of the core tenets of Islam is
"what is written is written"

and the Wahabists of Saudi encourage Suicide murder as a short cut to heaven

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/11/2015 22:17

Sorry scoop of course it's macaronesia .
But of course the holy grail of the MN holiday . A yurt where you see your own authentic clothing and farm your food whilst reading texts written by the indigenous population .

SistersOfPercy · 06/11/2015 22:18

That reminded me of something my friend told me flixy, he said some workers in the main sharm resorts could earn more than a doctor in Cairo.

It was never top of my destination list, dh and I had done city breaks etc and the idea of lazing in the sun for a week horrified me. Mil and fil wanted to do it and wanted us along so I webt and as I said above prepared for the worst.

Funny thing, it is possible to enjoy both an all inclusive week in the sun AND a trip to Kathmandu. I tend not to judge folk based on their choice of holiday destination.

Arrowminta · 06/11/2015 22:18

OK Talkin, I get that now, they don't need to be there and don't really want to be. Thank you for educating me, I didn't realise this.

Our own economy would be affected significantly without overseas tourism though.

Only1scoop · 06/11/2015 22:19

The Mn yurt

Book early to avoid disappointment

flixybelle · 06/11/2015 22:21

Talkinpeas I am not Muslim but I believe that also, in fact it was what got me through the flight home. However if I was a security guard it wouldn't make me do a crap job! The Egyptians I met and spoke to all struck me as incredibly hardworking and proud people it didn't seem part of the culture to half arse their jobs. That being said we did see one passport control on his phone the entire time but one person doesn't equal the entire nation.

TalkinPeas · 06/11/2015 22:21

Arrow
IMHO Tourism to a country should be about visiting that country

Egypt is a Muslim country with stupendous history.
How do all inc closed fence resorts that serve alcohol and tolerate near nudity fit with that?

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/11/2015 22:22

It's rare I'm tempted to break talk guidelines so I shall leave before I do. People do talk a load of fucking shit sometimes.

No, but he was not doing the job he was paid to do just days after the negligence of his colleagues killed over 200 people.
Unforgivable.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/11/2015 22:27

The pyramids have a bloody McDonald's next to them Charlie. So cultural , not touristy and tacky at all !

TalkinPeas · 06/11/2015 22:27

PS
I'm Swiss in my attitude to airport staff
I distrust them all equally
I travel enough in Europe, North America and other areas
to know that much Airport security is a bad joke with the wrong emphasis
the USA being one of the very worst places

Arrowminta · 06/11/2015 22:27

I went because I wanted a break in the sunshine and wanted to take by DC to the Pyramids, we covered up for Cairo, no nudity at all.

I know chefs and waiters in this country that are earning more than junior doctors or if not soon will be if Jeremy Hunt gets his way, just saying.....

Personally I would say that a terrorist (or group of) killed those people. I doubt him looking more closely at my passport as he stamped it would have made a huge difference. It just struck me as odd, then again he may have been a senior official multi tasking I don't speak arabic so no idea.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/11/2015 22:36

They look at them after they have been stamped though , at least they did in T2. The guy was really kind to my DD as she was really tired.

Potatoface2 · 06/11/2015 22:41

all i got from this was its cheap and the diving is great.....good thing to have on your headstone!

umiaisha · 06/11/2015 22:46

I would never go. Purely because I don't know anyone who has been and not got food poisoning!
