To wonder why the fuck anyone would want to go to Sharm El Shek anyway?

Just that really.

That part of the world is incrediably volatile at the moment, even more so since the terrorist attack in Tunisia. The foreign office advised against travelling there after that. I've always wanted to go to and see the pyramids but accept its not going to happen for the foreseeable future, it's not worth the risk . Now this terrible incident with the plane, clearly there is intelligence telling the government that it's just not safe to fly to or from there at the moment.

Aside from that, I've known loads of people who've been there and none have liked it. Huge purpose built resorts with gates and armed guards on them?! No thanks! I'd never be able to relax.

If you want some winter sun what's wrong with the good old Canaries?

Must admit never been my cup of tea along with all the Turkish resorts.

I just have a gut feeling one of them will be next.

ilovesooty · 06/11/2015 13:48

The pyramids aren't near Sharm anyway.

DisappointedOne · 06/11/2015 13:48

My husband goes for the diving. They fly in, get on a boat and then sail off for a week of diving. He's dived in the canaries - says it's not comparable.

wasonthelist · 06/11/2015 13:48

Yanbu to wonder, but I am biased because I'd rather set fire to my own hair than go on a beach/bar/pool sunshine holiday. A woman being evacuated today said she'd go back because she loved it and the staff were wonderful.

wasonthelist · 06/11/2015 13:49

If it was a bomb, I wonder what Putin's reaction will be.

Enjolrass · 06/11/2015 13:50

I have always wanted to go. But not sharm. I want to go see the sights which are no where near.

However, as much as I have wanted to go, I wouldn't risk it. Yanbu

Beebar · 06/11/2015 13:50

Lol, yanbu

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 06/11/2015 13:50

The advice was not to travel to Tunisia. Tunisia is not Egypt. Do you think the ban should cover the whole continent of Africa?

If what you mean is why would someone want to go on holiday to somewhere highly likely to suffer a terrorist attack then I'd guess the answer is that when they booked their holidays the situation was different.

The "good old canaries" are part of Spain, by the way, which is also on a high alert for terrorism. As is the UK.

This literally could have happened anywhere with slightly lapse security!

My idea of a nightmare!

DP's aunt is from Egypt and has an absolutely fascinating family. I can listen to her stories for hours (though getting them out of her is really hard work!).

NeedChoos · 06/11/2015 13:53

Sharm relies heavily on tourism - local people will suffer without it. Sharm is hours away from the Nile Valley / Pyramids.

Sharm is a fantastic winter destination and it's great for diving much better than the canaries.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 06/11/2015 13:53

The foreign office didn't advise against travelling to Sharm after Tunisia, other parts of Egypt yes but not Sharm. Like a PP says it's nowhere near the pyramids either. People go because unlike the Canaries you can pretty much guarantee the weather, the diving is fantastic and you get a better standard of hotel for your money. It's not my cup of tea tbh but the MN snobbery about beach/AI holidays always makes me laugh. People like different things, not difficult to understand surely?

Wildernessrock · 06/11/2015 13:53

The diving is amazing there- that's why we go. The "town" in sharm is awful, full of sleezy men trying to get you to buy stuff. If you stick to the beech/ diving/ your 5* all inclusive hotel it's an amazing holiday.

expatinscotland · 06/11/2015 13:53

I wonder this, too. No way I'd go near any of those places. I have had enough trouble find me in life through happenstance, I certainly won't go out of my way to course it.

AuntieStella · 06/11/2015 13:54

Here's a thread from just after the Tunisian attacks. I thought it might interest you:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2417034-AIBU-to-ask-if-youd-travel-to-Egypt

I was never interested in going to Sharm, because I don't like that sort of resort holiday. I'd only want to visit to see the Egyptological sites (possibly combined with Nile cruise) and FCO travel advice says those areas are OK. But there have been attacks on tourists (the Luxor massacre of 1997 being the biggest, but also other attempts such as a foiled suicide bomber earlier this year). So I'll be sticking to watching the Poirots and reading the Peabodys for now.

FragileBrittleStar · 06/11/2015 13:54

the diving is unbelievable - there is nothing comparable anywhere near as close to uk or as cheap.
I think its really sad - tourism is such a key industry there and the Egyptians have tried to protect the Red Sea resorts as they need them

takemetomars · 06/11/2015 13:55

YABU. I go to the four seasons in Sharm. I go for the food, the sunshine and the snorkelling. Horses for Courses. Don't be snobby

dontcryitsonlyajoke · 06/11/2015 13:56

Amazing snorkelling and diving, best I've ever experienced. Desert landscape is worth exploring. Weather is brilliant this time of year. Pretty perfect destination really :)

Perfectlypurple · 06/11/2015 13:56

For this time of year people go for the sun. If we had gone abroad this month it would have been Egypt but we decided against it because of the terror alert.

We went to sharm a couple of years ago. Loved the sun, tge hotel and a couple of trips. Hated going outside the hotel because of the hassle. We would only go back if we wanted to sit by the pool and do nothing but as much as I like to relax I do like to do trips and see a bit of the country I am visiting so unlikely to go back.

Palomb · 06/11/2015 13:56

I'd have loved to have gone to Cairo for the Pyramids and museums and I'd love to go on a Nile cruise but I went to Tunisia in my early 20's and promised myself I would never go back to a Muslim country and I won't.

Mil was talking only last week about going to Sharm over Christmas. DH told her in no uncertain terms that she was not to consider it and then the plane crash happened. They've been before several times as they like that sort of holiday but they would be mad to go at the moment and for the foreseeable future.

munkisocks · 06/11/2015 13:56

I went to sharm in 2005 and we had an attack happen just down the road whilst we were there! Completely destroyed a hotel near us Sad

FreckledLeopard · 06/11/2015 13:57

Sharm is pretty crappy - BUT - the diving is amazing! Unless you fly long-haul to far flung diving destinations, it is, I think, the closest place for really good dive sites.

llhj · 06/11/2015 13:57

Horrible place with a weird feeling of being utterly trapped in your resort whilst there's mass discontent throughout the country. I thinking attracts a similar crowd to those who holiday in Dubai, another cesspit imo.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/11/2015 13:58

I've never fancied it, nor Turkey. I most definetly would not be thinking or booking Turkey for next Summer.

We like Cape Verde for Winter sun.

SurferJet · 06/11/2015 13:58

Yanbu. Could never see the attraction myself.
