People who say "oh bless ME!!"

I know I'm being unreasonable - but I'm not into the whole "bless you " when people sneeze thing. At least not all the time.

It really aggravates me when someone sneezes around me and if I don't say it- I get th the 'death stare!' And then usually a loud "bless ME!!!"...to make a point!

Just go away wth your germs!!!!

Try living in France where there is a formal response to the first three!
A tes souhaits (to your wishes)
A tes amours ( to your loves)
And for the third one a blimmin poem which I never remember and CBA to Google!

badtime
I am atheist. I still bless sneezes. Yes it is rude to ignore the social conventions and traditions of the culture you are in (assuming you live in England). Better look how intorlerant you are of English culture first, before you start throwing stones.

reni2 · 06/11/2015 11:46

Do you bless a second or subsequent sneeze or is it safe to assume the blessing didn't work and not bother Grin?

FeelsLikeHome123 · 06/11/2015 11:53

I usually say "Bless us" and then "Excuse me".

If anyone fancies a bit of light entertainment re: sneezing. 7 minutes long but Matt Damon and Ben Affleck sooo Wink

ShebaShimmyShake · 06/11/2015 12:04

badtime, if you are living in England and making a huge song and dance over something as minor and harmless as blessing a sneeze, YOU are the intolerant one.

Is this really the only thing you feel strongly enough about on which to take a grand moral stand?

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/11/2015 12:36

I'm an atheist and say bless you/me.

Although I deliberately don't say it to people I don't like.

Petty triumphs are sometimes all I have so I embrace it Grin

HairySubject · 06/11/2015 12:55

Ah thanks for clearing that up. I was mildly offended that she implied I had the devil in me.

reni2 · 06/11/2015 13:55

But back to the OP, Oh bless ME is irritating if said in combination with a death stare, sounds like "Fine, I'll do it myself then so there".

Bless you- thank you
Bless ME - Fuck off

Moohoomeltdown · 06/11/2015 14:00

I say excuse me. My 21mo DS says moo-me. So cute.

ShebaShimmyShake · 06/11/2015 14:11

500 years ago it began with a religious inspiration. Nowadays nobody thinks of it as a religious thing or takes it seriously in a God/devil context. It's just two words you say to be polite when someone sneezes. It's no more religious than saying, "Oh for God's sake" or "Oh my God" when something surprises or horrifies you.

If someone fails to bless you after a sneeze and on account of being an atheist, they will be laughed out of the room.

OliviaDunham · 06/11/2015 14:16

Sheba actually saying "for gods sake" and "oh my god" is actually frowned upon by religious people as its classed as taking his name in vain. My DF is very churchy and DS1 is often told off by him for it.

Flumplet · 06/11/2015 15:37

I bless myself because i dont expect anyone else to do it, not because other people dont do it.

bialystockandbloom · 06/11/2015 15:56

When DP sneezes he says "bless you". To himself twat
