To think John Lewis should stock my size?

Should I expect John Lewis to stock the new winter coat I want in a size 18? DH thinks I should just stop going on about it but I am peeved that I made a special trip into town to buy the coat ( which goes up to a 20 on the brand website) to find that JL only sell it up to a 16. I would by it direct but I have lots of JL vouchers for my birthday and I also wanted to try it on. There has also been a history of deliveries going missing from our doorstep which makes me reluctant to buy online. I would like to fit the 16 but I'm only 2 weeks post baby and need room for enormous boobs! ( well and huge tummy/bum - oops)

YABU and I can see why your DH is fed up with you going on about it.

Why should you EXPECT any shop to sell a particular size? They will stock whatever the most popular sizes are. End of.

If you want a size that badly (especially if it's at the extreme top or lower end of the manufacturers scale), then you should check in advance to see if they have it.

There are plenty of dresses that JL stock in a minimum of size 8 that the manufacturers make in a size 6.

Gracious, get over it!

LetGoOrBeDragged · 08/11/2015 10:35

Maybe I am odd but I don't see 18 as an extreme top end of scale. I think 8 - 18 are standard sizes.

I think the OP's issue is that JL only stock up to size 16 - both in store and online- for a particular company, whereas that company do make the coat in a size 18, but if she goes directly to that company, she can't use her JL vouchers. Unfortunately, JL often do this with some ranges at both ends, I've found at the other end having small size 3 feet (or 2.5 in some shops!) that while some companies make certain shoes in sizes 2 and 3, in the consession in JL and other department stores, they only start them at 4. It is annoying when you have gift vouchers for a department store so can't go direct to the main shop of the brand.

The downside of a shop like JL that stock such a wide range of products, is they just don't have the capacity to stock every option for each range, for shops with a smaller range of products, they can stock every option within that product range.

They do need to think about their space vs the chances of them selling something, I recognise there just isn't a large number of people with child-sized feet like mine who want adult style shoes, so there's not the demand to justify stocking sizes 2/3 in all ranges, which could mean they are using up storage space so they can't offer a whole extra range to the 'normal' size feet woman.

In ranges aimed at teenagers, I'm more likely to find 2s and 3s as a lot haven't stopped growing yet so there's demand. If the coat you want is part of a range that's aimed at younger woman, there's less demand in the larger sizes, ranges aimed at older woman rarely stock the smaller dress sizes like 4 and 6.

But OP, I really wouldn't assume you'll be a size 18 still by Christmas if you have just had your first DC.

Go elsewhere and buy a different coat if it bothers you? Or wait? Two weeks post birth is not a long time.

I'm 5'2" and buying clothes is a never ending, boring battle. I'm a size 10-12 (or fat according to dm) and have a decent waist but a tiny chest. I've got wide, half-sized feet too. I can only buy shoes in Clarks or M&S.

DinosaursRoar · 08/11/2015 10:50

LetGo - it really depends on the target demographic for the clothing range, the average UK woman might be a size 16, but the average 16 year old is closer to 8-10, so a range that's targetting a younger market is less likely to sell many clothes above size 16. At the other end, clothing ranges for older woman rarely stock size 6s, even though the average height woman would still be easily in the 'healthy normal' range wearing a size 6.

This is a problem for smaller woman wanting smart but not expensive work wear, and a problem for larger woman who want to wear more fashionable clothes aimed at a younger market. Sadly, there's not enough demand from either to justify all shops catering for them.

LetGoOrBeDragged · 08/11/2015 10:58

I think we need to see the coat, to establish whether it is more teen or 'grown up woman'.

JL is a 'grown up' shop to me, so I would have thought their demographic was adult woman, who is as likely to be an 18 as an 8!

As an aside, if they are making a judgement that we need to be thinner, it would help if they stopped selling montezuma chocolate buttons! Wink

Ha ha - Am going to JL tomorrow and will look out for them

29herzie · 08/11/2015 18:40

Thanks everyone! So the coat is a seasalt mumsy number which I doubt any teen would be seen dead in. I am getting terribly close to 40 and have been a size 16-18 for at least the last 25 years... My shape hasn't changed hugely after DC1 so I'm not expecting a big change after this one (Just a bit lumpier). Yes it is a bit soon to be be buying a new coat but I am fed up with being cold and wet and my old coat died in the spring. Dh is relieved that because of this thread I have stopped going on about it too. Still deciding if I will just buy the 18 direct. Wait another month or so and see if I can squeeze into the 16, or just buy a cheap stop gap while I look around for something else.

I don't find it weird that Zara or Miss Selfridge only stock up to size 14 or 16, but I do find it odd that shops whose core constituency is middle aged ladies with middle-aged spread don't- or have very few of those sizes and they sell out first, like Next or M and S or JL. I think they are in denial about who buys their clothes which is why they have heaps of 8s and 10s left in their sales!

lorelei9 · 08/11/2015 19:08

29, I'm a bit confused

are you saying the JL website has it but the store doesn't and doesn't habitually stock 18 from that brand?

or are you saying you will buy it from the brand store online?

I do all my shopping online, partly because I hate shops but partly because it is so annoying and pointless to travel to the shop in the hope of them having your size and colour etc. If you are worried about goods going AWOL, can they be sent to a work address or can you get one of those locker arrangements? Or can it be sent to a collect plus shop etc.

lorelei9 · 08/11/2015 19:08

PS Obviously a collect plus shop depends what courier method they use but I find most big shops have that option or that type of option now.
