To think this Facebook post re: immigrants is nonsense?

Readytomakechanges · 03/11/2015 22:11

A relative has shared a post that basically says: immigrants get £26 per day in Tesco vouchers which is more than our hard working British elderly, that have paid into the system all of their lives, are entitled to. Apparently these vouchers are in addition to housing benefit etc. and they have been seen spending said vouchers on booze.
The post seems like nonsense, and I'd like to challenge it, but would like to have some facts to back up my points and am afraid I don't know any figures on what benefits 'immigrants' are entitled to. Does anyone know this data so I can back up my challenge with facts? And AIBU to think it's nonsense?

Are all immigrants poor then? What about billionaire business men and women who move to the UK? Are they also entitled to these mythical benefits solely on the basis of being born outside of the UK?!

What a load of shite!

Alfieisnoisy · 02/01/2016 17:22

It might not be as much as you think treacle. My son gets all travel paid for but that's because he attends an SEN schoo which is in the next town. He'd get this if I was in or out of work. Neither was I entitled to any help with uniform costs despite having to buy a new uniform for his special school. Maybe different areas do things differently,

I do know that migrants get varying amounts depending upon their reason for being here. I've worked with families entitled to lots of support (but not as much as UK residents) and those entitled to very little and for whom I have had to try and get charity support to deal with emergencies.

I'm wondering if the people who wrote the original facebook material could describe what they mean by an immigrant.

crappymummy · 02/01/2016 17:24

I'm in immigrant and I got a goose that shits golden eggs when I crossed the border

Parp

Really confused by this sentence.

Dipankrispaneven · 02/01/2016 17:40

The likes of Britain First are convinced that all immigrants are automatically given mansions, expensive cars and massive TVs with Sky subscriptions as soon as they set foot on British soil. Little things like evidence aren't going to change their minds.

What always makes me laugh is when they claim that illegal immigrants get that as well. It never seems to occur to them that there's a clue in the name, and that no illegal immigrant is going to claim benefits, for somewhat obvious reasons.

I wish we could introduce a compulsory critical thinking course for every adult in the UK, because since the internet has boomed, we need it.

I'm sick of reading posts that are so obviously bullshit that they might as well have a big red bullshit sticker stamped all over them, being shared and passed on by people who refuse to expend the energy to rub two of their brain cells together and actually think about what they just read, and whether or not it might be true, and do some research, and think about the motive of the person who wrote it in the first place.

It upsets me to discover some of my family and friends are brain-dead morons. I just want to shake them by the collar and shout 'Think for god's sake, think.'

Most recent one was tall tale about a school refusing to ban pork on the demand of Muslims, and the headteacher writing a terribly moving - lol - letter to all parents. Dear God. It didn't even read as a faintly possibly true story. Huge gigantic shouting sirens all over it that it was utter bollocks. How can some people not see them?

There are different rules. Non-EU immigrants can claim nothing as far as I know.

Asylum Seekers get a small amount to live on, far less than JobSeekers Allowance, and are not allowed to work for some time.

I'm not too sure about people who have come from the EU though.

BanningTheWordNaice · 02/01/2016 18:08

I'm always amused when I hear posters comment that they're privy to their friend of a friend's dog's sister's aunt's finances and why they don't earn earn, I'm sure they share with you every detail of exactly why they're entitled to those benefits. Or not.

MrsDeVere I completely agree. My MIL works for a small asylum seekers charity in the North West. I've been to their drop in centre. These people have absolutely nothing, and some of the situations they are in are so dire they are Dickensian.

I wonder why...

nancy75 · 02/01/2016 18:17

That link says that even if refused asylum you will be given somewhere to live? Is that correct?

I know an asylum seeker well. She gets a £35 card for Asda each week. You don't get change if you don't spend the whole amount. Nothing else. Unfortunately, the nearest Asda is miles away - too far to walk. She has no money for the fare. Unscrupulous people buy the Asda cards from asylum seekers for £25 cash. £25 doesn't go far when it's spent in local shops. That's the reality of being an asylum seeker today.

dementedpixie · 02/01/2016 18:22

It's short term housing until they are able to leave if you go on to one of the other pages after that

AgentProvocateur · 02/01/2016 18:24

And then when the claims are refused, they get nothing. They are literally destitute. No housing, no Asda card, nothing. They sleep rough and rely on soup kitchens. Because sleeping rough in the pouring rain in Glasgow is still often preferable to going back to a hellish situation at "home".

Furiosa · 02/01/2016 18:27

nancy75 yes they are given somewhere to stay while their deportation is finalised and their appeal rights are exhausted if

.They have children
.Further submission to their asylum application are received
.Assisting in their removal process
.Or removal to country of origin is not practical i.e no embassy in UK.

Otherwise they're rendered street homeless (referred to de-insisentivisation)

My sister is currently trying to organise a volunteer cooking Rota to make lunches for immigrant children at her preschool.

Many are not entitled to any benefits including free school lunches. They are three and four year old children who are starving FFS.

The parents are told they cannot remain in this country but their country of origin will not allow them back. They sre stuck.
