To want more than 2 weeks without ds getting a virus

Ds (2) goes to nursery 4 days a week. When he started at 9mo he has virus after virus. Never more than 2-3 weeks from one to the next. This continued for a few months, we saw a little relief over the summer and then again he caught every virus going over the long winter months. The worst was simultaneous tonsillitis and stomach bug which led to a week in hospital.
Then Spring came and it all calmed down. Summer was a breeze, only one or two bugs.
But now it's all started up again. He's has a week off with a cold and less than two weeks after coming back was sent home with sickness. And me, I'm sick of people saying 'oh he'll have a really strong immune system after all this' - well if that was true why didn't last year's rigmarole sort him out!?!?
I hate to see him unwell and we're loosing all hope for the future and all leave allowance for the year
AIBU to be sick of all this sick? And are there others out there in the same boat?

You can get a toddler version of first defence.

Vaseline are undo the inside of the nostrils can apparently stop viruses progressing into sinuses too.

Alternatively, view it as immune system strengthening. Wink

I hear you. Especially only getting a 2-3 week break between viruses.

When DD started the half term break from preschool I thought "Great, at least she'll have a week where she won't catch anything". Cold started on Monday and she shared it with the baby Hmm

LittleFishBigOcean · 01/11/2015 18:42

Yep, same here with DD. It seems like there's always something. Like you, the summer was ok, then 3 weeks ago another bout of gastroenteritis. The third in 12 months. On top of ear infections, chest infections, general viruses and conjunctivitis.

I don't have an answer or a suggestion, but I too hate seeing her poorly and I get so upset and down when she is ill. WineCakeFlowersBrew Take a pick of those to make you feel better.

It sucks doesn't it. Ds is 2 and has had a cold for about 2 months (it's not one cold but a series of them).

It's so frustrating and exhausting. His big sister is 4 though and went through the same when she was two. She gets far less colds now.

My DD started at nursery and was exactly the same for a year she had EVERYTHING. I removed her from nursery to a childminder, never had any further problems.

schokolade · 01/11/2015 19:57

Same here. Ridiculous.

DD has just moved nurseries. This one is much smaller and rural. Got my fingers crossed for an improvement...

SarahSavesTheDay · 01/11/2015 20:04

Poor you. When mine were in nursery, I liked to think that there's a pre-ordained number of illnesses a child will have before 5. Consider the possibility that you're on an accelerated path.

anotherdayanothersquabble · 01/11/2015 20:10

We had to take DS out of nursery, and look to nutrition and alternative medicine to boost his immune system. Vitamin C, D, A, probiotics, essential fatty acids, no dairy, no sugar.

ShowOfBloodyStumps · 01/11/2015 20:17

DD attended preschool for 6 months only (January to July) when she was 3/4 and then went to school. In that time, she had hand foot and mouth, slapped cheek, chicken pox, tonsillitis, scarlet fever, 5 ear infections, a chest infection, 2 bouts of gastroenteritis and countless coughs and colds.

Since starting school, she's had perhaps 5 days off sick total and she's been there for five years. She hasn't had so much as a cold for at least a year.

tobysmum77 · 01/11/2015 20:21

I think being ill seems to affect some children more than others, dd1 was definitely more soft than dd2 and I had a year/ 18 months where I was despairing.

In the long run though she had no days off in reception or year 1. Don't want to tempt fate any further!

Thanks for replies. Came home today (ds had been with grandparents) to the report that he hadn't been sick again but has a 38.4deg fever and won't stop coughing.
Hello wits end, it's nice to meet you. Sad

Oh god I can still remember those times and my youngest is 28. It's never ending and everything they bring home you seem to end up getting yourself.

Much sympathy OP. It will stop eventually. Flowers

specialsubject · 02/11/2015 19:33

it happens. Part of life, being a kid is not all fun and games sadly. And part of being a parent as you get lots of colds too! Comes of being in a crowd of kids and all swapping infections.

BTW there is no way to boost an immune system assuming all basic nutritional needs are being met, and the child is otherwise in normal health. A sugar-free diet is impossible.

NotNob · 02/11/2015 20:12

Yep, I get you OP. Had it with eldest and now it's youngest DC's turn. Summer was a breeze but it took only a couple of weeks into the Autumn term before he was on antibiotics for tonsillitis and infected eczema. Half term sorted him out and am awaiting the next thing any day as it's back to nursery today.

Bodicea · 02/11/2015 20:22

My 2 year old has had three colds in the last two months. Two out of three have put him in hospital for two nights each time. The other one I had too plead with the dr
I could manage at home. We are going to centreparcs at the weekend and he just got sneezed allowed today. I feel like crying :-(
