To be so worried about tomorrow's colonoscopy

I know I should be grateful that my poorly performing bowel is being looked onto, after asking for help over the last 8 years.

To be honest the last pills they gave me are so good and took me from house bound with free running bottom, to being able to get out (to places near toilets) recently. I hoped I would just stick to the miracle pills but the doctors want to check my bowel too.

So I have too start prepping tonight with a litre of laxitive and another litre first thing tomorrow. :(

I am embarrassed about the whole bottom bit but that is unavoidable like smears, I will cope with that. I am so frightened they will find something terrible.

I am keep reminding myself that I am lucky they are checking to be on the safe side....so why am I worrying so much....I had no sleep last night.

Whatever will be will be. Tell me everything will be OK.

Finished jug. Just a couple hours to wait and I can leave the bathroom and have a nice clear herbal tea (most milk)

Good luck today, once the prep is done the worst will be over

Good....I still worried about the hospital bit but I just have to go and get through it. A lot of people will be having much worse procedures today.

Vaseline is fab. I am just bored of sitting on or standing next to toilet ! By 11am I should be OK to go downstairs :)

Well done. It's shit (literally) but soon it'll be over. Smile

temporaryworried · 02/11/2015 09:00

It will :)

How long were you in the hospital for ? My letter says between 2 and 4 hours. Is that realistic ?

Good luck today, I have to have regular colonoscopies & the prep is the worst bit! Last time I was there about 2 hours, appointment was 10am & I was home by half 12 sipping tea & eating a bacon butty. Take the sedation & painkillers if they offer them. I've had bowel surgery so I find it very uncomfortable but watching on the screen is fascinating. Hope everything goes ok Flowers

Two hours and out for a bacon butty sounds great. Actually I would settle for this prep to finish :(

I am just home and so pissed off.

  1. The prep didn't stop at all and the mobile unit I went too had 10 people and ONE sodding toilet. :( Which I had to stand choose to and dash into multiple times
  1. The sedation didn't work at all. I was stressed and anxious throughout.
  1. The actual procedure was very uncomfortable and very painful at times. They were leaning on my stomach trying to get camera around the corner.
  1. They took out a polpy and some samples of walls and what they saw was ok.
  1. Because they got the camera stuck, they barely got half way through and they want me to go through the whole procedure again. In a couple of weeks.

I am so pissed off. Prep is horrible. The procedure hurts me (they think due to parts of my bowel sticking to my other organs after my c section.) Sedation has no effect on me.

I don't want to go through this again. I think I will cancel. I have barely slept the past few nights...what a pointless waste of time :(

I am sorry you had such a bad experience. It may be possible to have the next one under deeper sedation, with an anaesthetist present. That doesn't get you round have to take the horrible bowel prep, but it would at least mean that the actual scope is easier.

Ring your consultant's secretary and ask to speak to the consultant either in outpatients or over the phone before you commit to a second scope. It may even be that the consultant can suggest an alternative investigation, though I don't want to get your hopes up - it all depends on exactly what they are looking for and how far the scope got today.

temporaryworried · 02/11/2015 19:27

Thanks. I will have a think tomorrow.

My colonoscopy was very painful. The sedation didn't seem to work and I was crying in pain. It didn't help that I had a painful attack of gout too!

Afterwards I felt weepy and violated. I know it sounds dramatic but that was the truth for me.

However, my endoscopy was a breeze. Felt and remembered nothing and had a lovely sleep.

After the colonoscopy they got me a cheese and pickle sandwich and nothing has ever tasted so divine after not eating for days.

Anaffaquine · 02/11/2015 20:03

I had this on Thursday. The prep tastes disgusting but I agree it is better than the enema.
I won't ever have a full colonoscopy without sedation/pain relief ever again. But a smaller scope was not too bad.
Hope it goes well tomorrow and you get the answers you are looking for.

BalloonSlayer · 03/11/2015 18:17

I didn't think the sedation worked when I had mine either. I made a hell of a fuss too because a friend had told me that when she did they knocked her right out. I was hoping for that but no joy. I reckon I could have driven home, whereas when I had had the gastroscopy a fortnight before I was really quite woozy and out of it. I reckon the "sedation" is just a muscle relaxant so they can get the thingy up your arris.

GreenPetal94 · 03/11/2015 19:11

Sorry it was so painful and stressful. Could you ask for a general anaesthetic?
