Got my payslip today, everything normal, as it should be, except I'm on maternity leave and by now it should have dropped to smp.

They're going to make me pay it back when they realise aren't they?

But what if they don't ever realise?

What would you do? Fess up or wait and see what happens?!

Stick it in the bank to gain interest but ring fence it and don't spend it. They probably will ask for it back but until then, earn interest.

My work has recently changed its maternity pay. You get longer on full pay - could you check into whether yours has done the same?

molyholy · 29/10/2015 20:06

Ahh they will make you pay it back sorry to say. Why don't you put it to one side and leave it for a while and see what happens.

goodnightdarthvader1 · 29/10/2015 20:06

I'd tell them, especially if you're planning on going back. The duplicity won't look good for you.

AnyFucker · 29/10/2015 20:07

I would ring and check.

Don't sit on it. You might be tempted to spend it. Then uh-oh.

AnyFucker · 29/10/2015 20:08

You might have calculated wrong. You could be entitled to it. Then it's way-haaay.

ClaraLane · 29/10/2015 20:09

I'm not sure who you work for but I work within the NHS and it is a contractual obligation for staff to inform their line manager of any salary over- and underpayments. I know too many who have had issues with their pay after receiving overpayments to keep it secret if I received one.

AlwaysHope1 · 29/10/2015 20:14

It would be dishonest otherwise, not sure why you would even think this is ok?

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 29/10/2015 20:17

I think for the first six weeks of leave it is often paid at 90% of your salary, and drops to statutory payments after.

I recall that as my employer bitched about having to pay it, while employing my maternity cover at a third more than my salary, one of the reasons I never went back.

Is it the same as your normal salary or could it be 90%?

tentothesix · 29/10/2015 20:21

This happened to me in August. I had to pay it back...they deducted it from September!!! I work in public sector.

avocadoghost · 29/10/2015 20:21

Query it. It'll probably bite you on the arse if you don't.

Muskey · 29/10/2015 20:24

Please let them know if you think they have overpaid you. They will find out eventually and then it doesn't look good on you

catfordbetty · 29/10/2015 20:26

Stick it in the bank to gain interest

Given that will earn you about 37p, I'd just own up.

springydaffs · 29/10/2015 20:26

I got a big payment recently, unexpectedly. I liked the look of it all plump in my account and looked at it.

Turns out it is mine fair and square.

I wouldn't have kept it if it wasn't. Too much future aggro. But I liked it there for a while.

VimFuego101 · 29/10/2015 20:28

Are you owed any outstanding holiday pay? it could be that.

Dogsmom · 29/10/2015 20:49

I'd tell them because it'll play on your mind otherwise, they may let you keep it.

My dh was once given an annual bonus that he wasn't entitled to, he works for a huge national company that is owned by a bank and we toyed with the idea of keeping quiet to see if they noticed.
It didn't feel right though and we knew we could never spend it as we'd have to take out a loan to repay it if they ever asked for it.
He told his manager who told him to ring HR which he did and they said that they couldn't see what the error was and in their eyes the matter was closed, we still have the money in an isa and daren't spend it because we know they were in the wrong!

KittyandSqueal · 29/10/2015 20:55

A similar thing happened to me. I'm teacher so maternity pay goes down in increments over set weeks. Bloody hard to work out on a monthly basis with a newborn baby. Anyway, 3 months into maternity I realised I was still being paided full.

After much calling around and speaking to incompetent people at payroll (fucking capita) and ensuring a guy that yes I was sure I was on maternity and no I hadn't imagined the small person coming out of my vagina they finally sorted it.

I refused to pay it back in one go (as I hadn't realised and had spent it all) so they reduced the rest of my maternity payments.

It's such a pain in the ass but I'd get it sorted, chances are they'll realise and want it back.

Yarpyarp · 29/10/2015 21:10

What an honest bunch you are!

It's definitely an oversight, no holiday owed, no policy change. It's a big company but with certain things they are totally disorganised. It wouldn't surprise me if they never noticed..

I'm too paranoid to go on a spending spree though. What a shame! Wink

I would keep it but not spend it for a while…………..

SurlyCue · 29/10/2015 21:29

This happened to me. They took it back off me in one go out of the next months pay. Which just happened to be the month i moved into my house (from my parents') i only got £150 that month! Thank heavens for my mum helping me out. It was my november pay too so xmas was tight.

waitingforcalpoltowork · 29/10/2015 21:35

funny thing when i was on maternity pay they calculated it from a time period when i was working loads of overtime then we went on short time so by the time i went on maternity pay my pay was actually more than the wages i had been living on plus they made me redundant and had to pay me my accumulated holiday pay which i continued to accrue during my maternity pay i often wonder if they actually saved any money at all getting rid of me!

but seriously tell them
