Lovely people, just moved in to house next door. They're back here from Australia where they were for 2 years.

Yesterday, she, unpacking, found a red back spider in her suitcase and let it go in the garden, saying she felt it deserved to live as it's survived the journey... I can't fucking believe it, they're poisonous no? I'm bloody worried now it shins up the drain pipe and bites my DD.

I am hoping for a really cold winter this year

batshitlady · 29/10/2015 18:35

DD has a friend coming over for sleepover tomorrow as well. I'm really tempted to cancel it now.

This has the potential to turn my tedious life upside down.

Apparently spiders don't like conkers. Could you build a conker barrier?

Or just immerse yourself in conkers just to be on the safe side.

Spiders are everywhere, you can't avoid them. There's a thread today where a posters DH woke up last night having being bitten by one in his bed!If it's going to come out it will come out when you aren't around or are sleep

easterlywinds · 29/10/2015 18:39

Red backs are fairly harmless, they build a web and don't move away from it. Their web is quite unique. If you poke them, they may bite but if you use the flat side of your shoe they will go splat. It's suggested that only 20% of people react to the red back venom so they're not necessarily poisonous. They live in South Australia so obviously can survive a light frost. Your neighbour is slightly mad for not having thrown a spider bomb in her crate before she left.

batshitlady · 29/10/2015 18:43

I know spiders are everywhere, I don't have a problem with spiders. Only venomous ones that some prick throws out her back door to live its life. I don't suppose anywhere in South Australia is quite as densely populated as this area is.

Some parts of Adelaide are fairly densely populated. We used to have loads of them living in our garden and shed (rental property). I freaked out at first and gradually got used to them. I just taught the kids who were toddlers at the time to leave the webs alone. You can shift them by wrapping the web very carefully around a stick. I was more worried by the whitetail spider as they walk around the house, and their bites tend to become ulcerated.

Oooooooh. Hope it's not preggo.

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
I jumped up high into the air,
And when I hit the ground.
That crafty redback spider,
Wasn't nowhere to be found.

I rushed into the mrs,
Told her just where I'd been bit.
And she grabbed my cutthroat razor,
And I nearly took a fit.
I said 'Forget what's on your mind,
And call a doctor please.
For I've got a feeling that your cure,
Is worse than the disease.'

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight.
And I curse the redback spider,
On the toilet seat last night.

I can't lie down, I cant' sit up I don't know what to do.
The nurses think it's funny but that's not my point of view.
I tell you it's embarrasing and that's to say the least,
For I'm too sick to eat a bite,
While the spider had a feast.

And when I get back home again, I'll tell you what I'll do.
I'll make that Redback suffer for the pain I'm going through.
I've had so many needles, I'm looking like a siv.
I promise you that redback hasn't very long to live.

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight.
And I curse the redback spider,
On the toilet seat last night.

Love that poem MidnightScribbler.

Yes that's great. I still think I can see it out the corner of my eye everytime I think of it. Saw her today, (neighbour) didn't say hello.

Ok... Where in London? North, South, West, East? Tell me OP, so I can start flinching at every movements! (Not even kidding)

limitedperiodonly · 30/10/2015 20:02

You have just made up my mind for me. I'm going to put on Arachnophobia while I'm cooking the dinner.

corlette · 30/10/2015 20:58

You are all going to hate me but this happened to me a couple of years ago when I came back to the UK for a visit from Australia.
It was only a huge but harmless Huntsman though. It had stowed away in my bag and in my defence I did try and catch it but scuttled off behind the fireplace.

Mother went bananas and threw my bag into the garage, clothes, hand luggage, everything. Every item had to be shook thoroughly and searched.

This is now routine every time we come over. Dad's car to collect us from airport, not hers. Bags straight into garage for thorough search while she stands at a safe distance.
Border control are nothing compared to her. Grin

MidniteScribbler · 30/10/2015 23:08

corlette how can you possibly resist the urge to put a big fake spider in your bag every time you visit?

derxa · 30/10/2015 23:17

I don't know about spiders but I'm not keen on MN tonight.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 30/10/2015 23:23

I want to vomit.

corlette · 30/10/2015 23:39

Midnite we are coming over in July next year. Fabulous idea.

SideOrderofChips · 30/10/2015 23:39

Oh my god...thank god im accross the channel

MidniteScribbler · 04/11/2015 00:11

I had to evict a white tail spider from my car yesterday. Crawled out of a plant I purchased and was climbing over the headrest.

I should have saved him for you corlette. Grin
