To be nervous as hell about reading aloud

I am a published writer and have been asked to read a short story aloud at an upcoming literary evening. I am really nervous because I have a very soft voice which I know doesn't project very well. I really want to do this reading, partly because the event is in aid of charity, and partly because it will be good for me.

Any tips on how to conceal nerves and learn to speak up?

Will they have mics?

Great minds Smile

Yes, there'll be a microphone but apparently the last time I read it was hard to hear me (my mum, who was in the audience, has just helpfully given me this information, making me more nervous than ever Sad)

Practice, practice, practice.

Can you get someone to video you so you can make changes to your intonation til you're happy with it?

I find that the slower you speak, the more you will be able to project your voice.

Could you ask for a microphone?

There's a certain technique with microphones (trust me). You need to speak softly but very close to the Mike. If you can practice & do some sound checks beforehand you'll get it just right. Also speak slower than normal and maybe enunciate most the sounds in each word (think Robert Peston). They want to hear you speak, they won't mind what seems like a slow delivery.

Practice, practice, practice - and keep your chin up (literally, not metaphorically!) as your voice will project more than if you tuck your chin down.
