to think that Nigel Farage is absolutely right in this instance.

Whether you agree with the UKIP or not, he is absolutely right about democracy only being allowed when it produces a result that the EU agree with (in light of what happened in Portugal this week);

Nigel is right about many things.

WhetherOrNot · 29/10/2015 18:42

Many things he has said in the past are coming true/going to come true. But the Nigel Haters will still insist UKIP are wrong. (preparing myself to be challenged - don't bother!).

KurriKurri · 29/10/2015 18:47

The Portuguese election results don't prove his point in any way.

All they prove is that like many democratic electoral systems, the Portuguese one has it's own vagaries as does our own.

Farage's view of why the Portuguese election panned out as it did is very much his own interpretation based on his own very specific and biased political agenda.

he can be right i just think he looks like a turkey and i cant listen to anything he says without laughing perhaps i should close my eyes?

Mistigri · 29/10/2015 18:50

I don't know if he's right because I don't know anything about the Portuguese constitution.

And I'm prepared to bet that neither the OP nor Farage have the foggiest clue about it either!

Justanotherlurker · 29/10/2015 19:13

He's not 100% right and is using this to suit his agenda (as you would expect), it's far more complex and the euroskeptic side of Portugal got around 14% of the vote (depending on how you class the parties) iirc

This article is a little more sane than listening to Nigel, it's not perfect either but slightly more balanced

It's all very complicated in Portugal, my DH knew many of the current BE and PS politicians from back in the day and it's a lot about personalities etc. I don't think Farage has enough insight into how things work in Portugal to draw the conclusions he has by any stretch of the imagination. You need a deep understanding of how things work and the people involved and their histories to see how it all works. The socialists PS and BE would have enough seats if the went into coalition with the communists but the communists won't do that and also Cavaco Silva is more supportive of PSD etc on the whole. It may yet be re-run however and it seems much eventually could rest on the decisions of people like DH who are emigrés.

It would probably be more realistic to say that:

"things Nigel Farage says aren't automatically wrong".

Although half of MN would probably burn me at the stake for saying that.....
