AIBU to think this is NOT Acceptable at work

Moved offices 4 weeks ago and there are no bins for Sanitary stuff in the ladies toilets. It was reported on the first or 2nd day but nothing is happening.
There is one such bin in the disabled toilet.

I feel that it implies that having a period is a disability, which I think is unacceptable. What does the Mumsnet jury think?

I wouldn't go as far as the disability bit although I can see where you are coming from but it's definitely unacceptable.

99percentchocolate · 29/10/2015 08:28

I think you may be reading between the lines there - sorry! It sounds like you just have a really bad office manager.

bumbleymummy · 29/10/2015 08:28

Ok, I do not think it implies that having a period is a disability but there should be disposal bins in the toilets so I would chase it up.

Choughed · 29/10/2015 08:28

No, not acceptable but sounds like incompetence rather than something sinister.

Raise it again. Buy a cheap lidded bin and some liners and claim the money back on petty cash. It shouldn't be a big deal.

HelenaJustina · 29/10/2015 08:28

You're not wrong, completely unacceptable...

Is it your workplace or the bin supplier who has left the gap? Could HR do anything?

YBR · 29/10/2015 08:36

We don't have an office manager but the person managing office-move related things is (1) male, and (2) crap, and (3) an Arse.

Start flushing them down the loo. When the toilets keep getting blocked and they have to call plumbers in he will sort a bin!

megletthesecond · 29/10/2015 08:47

Use your bosses bin. A day of that and they'll remember to order a proper bin for the toilets.

Unescorted · 29/10/2015 08:48

Start leaving them half wrapped in the kitchen bin - they will soon sort it out.

bumbleymummy · 29/10/2015 08:53

Yuck. Please don't do what these people are suggesting.

Be an adult and speak to the office move person and tell him he needs to get it sorted by X date. Prob best if you send an email so you have it in writing. If it's not sorted, go above him.

Penfold007 · 29/10/2015 08:57

If you search 'sanitary bins at work legal requirements UK' you find loads of info. Your workplace is legally required to provide suitable bins, email the office manager.

Chillyegg · 29/10/2015 08:59

Ahahahhaha
Goodness me don't do any of these disgusting but hilarious suggestions. Mention it again and or buy a small bin from the £shop with liners and clame the change back if you can.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 29/10/2015 09:04

Speak to the man - in front of lots of people. Smile sweetly and embarrass the hell out of him Grin

HippyPottyMouth · 29/10/2015 09:05

It's not fair to any disabled colleagues if they can't get in the only loo they can use because it's full of ladies changing their tampons, which they could do in any loo.

AnyoneButAndre · 29/10/2015 09:06

I don't think you should buy one of your own either. They've probably got some kind of specific external contract to sort the sanitary waste who only use their own bins. Get several women to write to facilities manager and say "if it's not sorted by day X we'll raise a formal complaint."

Eva50 · 29/10/2015 09:11

E-mail your boss, copying in everyone in the department and beyond, asking him to put the "lack of sanitary bins" on the agenda for his next department meeting. A bin should appear promptly.

BathshebaDarkstone · 29/10/2015 09:12

I don't think that it implies that having a period is a disability but it's definitely unacceptable.

kinkytoes · 29/10/2015 09:14

Contact HR?

Lweji · 29/10/2015 09:18

I just tend to roll my sanitary stuff in toilet roll and put it in the normal bins.
Or use the disabled toilet.

But if I really wanted the bin, then I'd basically sit at the managers desk and not leave until he ordered one. All smiles and all, but insist on it, should he forget to do it at another time.
Or start going in the men's toilet during my period and leave bloody tampons in plain sight in their bins.

Pipbin · 29/10/2015 09:22

I believe there is a charge per bin so could this be a money saving exercise?

blueobsessive · 29/10/2015 09:33

The chap who arranged the move probably didn't think (not excusable but lampooning him publicly - although I can understand the temptation- is unlikely to help). Also if, post move, he is no longer the person who deals with facilities/ office cleaning etc, raising with him won't help. You'll just have wasted time with arse.
As there is one in the disabled loo there must, I'd have thought, be arrangements for safe disposal. I'd suggest finding out who deals with office facilities and asking them to arrange for a second similar bin in the ladies loos. Unless all the women in the office are menopausal (surely unlikely) this is an issue which is going to arise often. Whoever deals with facilities faces a continual stream of polite requests for years if they don't sort it...

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 29/10/2015 09:57

Are you in proper offices? That are owned rather than rented? It just strikes me as weird that they wouldn't be there anyway!

I would start badgering about it. It's not a disability, it's nothing to be ashamed of, and it needs to be sorted. I don't see the problem of wrapped used sanitary wear being binned elsewhere but it shouldn't have to be.

Until someone speaks up it won't get dealt with. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he doesn't actually know there aren't any in there?
