To think wearing a £2600 dress is vulgar?

According to This Morning (I'm on half term with a rare child - free day, don't judge) Kate Middleton was wearing some designer flowery thing for a night out this week that cost £2600.

AIBU in feeling slightly sick at the thought of a garment costing so much? Especially when that is almost two month's wages for me.

Even if I got rich, I swear I would never feel comfortable spending that sort of money on clothes Confused

Well there are people on this thread talking with great authority about how The DofC pays for her clothes. No link so far.

I can say that I know for absolute certainty that Diana did not pay the retail / going rate for her clothes. I was involved and saw the invoices. Yes, she paid something for her clothes. But it absolutely was not what other people paid for the same clothes. I can guarantee that with 100% certainty and I would be surprised if DofC is not given the same advantages, but I have no evidence either way. But those stating that she pays, how do you know?

As far as I am aware, she is not allowed to accept clothing loaned or gifted in the same way as Samantha Cameron and numerous other high profile women are not allowed to eg: newsreaders. It's deemed to be unethical.

Discounts might be another story Grin but the bad PR of getting a £40k dress for £2k is not worth it in her world I imagine.

I think she does a good job of blending high street/middle high/designer and couture.

To the OP's question. It doesn't make me feel sick. There are better more worthy uses for £2.6 k I am sure but it's all relative. Why she in particular should come in for criticism I am not sure particularly as she seems to recycle her clothing and get good value from it.

Anyway - here's a link to the full cost breakdown of everything she was wearing barring her underwear

AFewGood
The incestuous relationship between Diana and a couple of her favourite designers
and the way the Emmanuels carried on for ever and ever
is exactly why Chazza pays for Kate.

OurBlanche · 29/10/2015 16:52

AFew if you did what some of us did and used Google you would immediately be given the information you seek. Official confirmation that taxpayers do not support the Cambridges. Don't be so lazy, demanding links and trying to make it seem suspicious when others refuse to pander to you makes you sound daft. Especially when the information is so freely available - which may be why others have not bothered to do it for you!

A little more digging and you would find that the taxpayer pays a lot less than you might expect, that the royals have started to pay taxes, and a lot more, without bothering the taxpayer and that the government supports the rest via the land and properties given it by royalty of yesteryear in return for a yearly stipend - and we, the taxpayer, reap by far more of the benefits of that arrangement.

It isn't as simple as 'paid for by the taxpayer' and, if you are going to dislike someone you may as well do it for real reasons as imagined or meeja hyped ones!

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 29/10/2015 16:57

Confused so we can only wear clothes according to your budget?

shall we just don the communist cloth and all wear the same?

how silly. esp as she is a walking ad and probably has not paid for any of her clothes! they will be sent to her free

KatharineClifton · 29/10/2015 16:57

YABU.

It's rather vulgar of This Morning to be banging on about price. WTF should princesses wear? Don't these frocks get auctioned off for charity in the end anyway?

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 29/10/2015 17:03

Kate is thought to have spent at least £35,000 on high-end and couture clothing since the beginning of the year – but neither she nor the Duke of Cambridge is footing the bill.

Instead, her father-in-law, Prince Charles, will meet the cost.

She is showcasing British fashion around the world. Part of her job. However, if the dress you are talking about is the one she wore on Tuesday evening, not sure it was the best choice. I found it hideous, but maybe it's because I am of an age where I remember having to wear bridesmaids dresses in the early eighties with that big frill thin round the bottom! Much preferred the choice for the Bond premiere!

KatharineClifton · 29/10/2015 19:21

It does look better on the model mind Grin and you can add a feather boa and stripper shoes for Vegas effect!

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 29/10/2015 19:22

Now I'm back down from cloud coo coo land.

I enjoy seeing Kate dressed up, just the same as anyone else in the limelight. But I don't give much more thought than ah she looks nice or, should have picked something else. 5 fleeting seconds of my day. Certainly not something to get worked up over.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 29/10/2015 19:23

Katharine, stripper shoes haha! Couldn't imagine chasing the kids with some on, could use the boa as a lassou though Grin

TheWernethWife · 29/10/2015 19:27

Mrs Beckham is in todays Mail wearing one of her creations - costs £1,650. There are people prepared to pay that much and more.

AFewGoodWomen · 29/10/2015 20:32

It was Charles who paid for Diana's dresses right up until the end, out of interest.

AFewGoodWomen · 29/10/2015 20:36

And Talkinpeece you do sound authoritative with little to back it up. Diana's wedding fpdress was by the Emmanuels but they quickly fell out of favor. She went on to wear a black strapless gown and a pale gown (also strapless) by them but hardly anything else. She learnt her lesson when the wedding dress was universally drubbed.

DinosaursRoar · 29/10/2015 20:59

To be fair, 'her' money comes from the Dutchy of Cornwall - the profits of the estate Charles has. So while you can argue that should be money coming into the state, she doesn't actually recieve money to pay for frocks from the tax payer, and if Charles gives his money to his DIL or spends it on himself, it doesn't really make much difference.

However, if you were going to spend £2.6k on a frock to an event, why would anyone pick that one? There surely must be more flattering dresses in that price range...

(I think it would be very hard to break down what she actually pays per item, she will get big discounts, but as she orders several outfits from the same designers, it would be hard for anyone to get a clear break down per dress/coat to see the difference)

SkandiStyle · 29/10/2015 21:00

2.5k for a couture dress is actually not that expensive. There will have been people at the same event wearing 5/6/7K or more outfits.

To these people it is entirely normal to spend this sort of money on clothes. It's all relative.

kali110 · 30/10/2015 01:37

lord No, not all of us love the royals, just don't see why someone should be called vulgar for spending money on a dress.

carrot i love that show! That is one of my favourite designers! Too bad i shall never wear one of her dresses!

Tram10 · 30/10/2015 07:57

That particular dress was pretty tasteless and not very attractive, but I do think she is very reasonable with her clothes, she wears outfits on more than one occasion and I love that she will wear designer one day and high street the next.
