to be upset with the woman with dog in a playground

I was walking my dog at a local area that has a popular playground. It has a strong swing gate in it that has a very obvious sign that quite clearly states no dog by way of a nice little picture of a dog with a red line through it. At least, I thought that the sign made it obvious. I saw a woman with her kid and her dog in the playground whenI drove past to park. As they were still in there 15mins later (with said dog off his lead and running about on, and jumping on and off, some of the play equipment that has a platform on) I approached her and advised her she shouldn't have the dog in there. I've got 2 DD and I often don't take them in there as there is dog poo in there.
They were the only ones in there and she was insistent it was ok as she had bags with her.
I pointed out this wasn't good enough and if it said no dogs, it means no dogs whether they've pooed in there or not. If we know we're going to the playground, my dog stays at home. If it's been spontaneous, he gets tied up to the railings on the outside of the park.
She didn't like this pointed out and seemed to feel I was being unreasonable. Thoughts?

No dogs means no dogs. On lead areas mean on lead. Although most dog owners are responsible a few give the rest of us a bad name.

katienana · 27/10/2015 14:25

Our local park is all open but the playground has loads of signs saying no dogs. On Sunday there must have been 10 dogs on there! Thing is with so many dogs they start winding each other up.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/10/2015 14:32

Of course yanbu. No dogs means no dogs. The end*.

The no dogs thing is not about poo at all though because the shit shouldn't be anywhere for a start. Picking it up is the very least a dog owner should do.

The no dogs thing is to provide a safe space for small children to use the play equipment, some of whom might be afraid of dogs or unable to behave in a way that wouldn't upset a dog.

The dogs have the whole park they don't need to be in the playground. The woman was an idiot.

*Assistance dogs excepted obviously.

YANBU

Similar happened to me recently. 'Baby' playground fenced off, No Dogs sign by the gate. Who's inside? A woman and her dog. Dog bounding around.

I was put off going in. I don't want to have to start having confrontations with people who have ignored the bloody great sign.

As i was dithering someone else complained to the park warden (someone dogless and childless at the time) who came over and told her to take the dog out. I was grateful for that.

DH2R · 27/10/2015 14:36

YADNBU!

My dog sometimes does horrendous squitty splodges and with the best will in the world, some gets left on the ground.

I always tie my dog up outside playgrounds.

If she'd kept it on a lead under very close control I think I'd have grumbled to myself but let it pass.

Off the lead there's the definite risk it might spit one out without her noticing, ffs.

Well done OP!

And to those of you berating OP for (you misunderstood, but regardless) going out of her way to make the point - you're missing the point! Had she not gone out of her way how could she ensure there would be no depth charges left on her (or anyone else's!) next visit to the very same 'ground!

GoblinLittleOwl · 27/10/2015 14:37

Good for you.

LovelyFriend · 27/10/2015 14:38

Next time just take her & dogs photo and send the photo to park management/council. Dealing directly with the willfully ignorant is kind of pointless.

cantucci01 · 27/10/2015 14:49

i've got a dog and I don't let him into playground areas because it's nice for children to be sure that there are no nasties in a particular area, she was an idiot - anybody who has a dog must know that sometimes you can't get the ground perfectly clean & understand the problem.

glampinggaloshes · 27/10/2015 14:54

Shocked at the number of those who thought you were BU in any way. Dog faeces is filthy, bagged or not its still there. whether or not you were in the playground is totally irrelevant. babies crawl around it that area and kids sit down, pick up things. is it too much to ask that they have one place where they can roll around without dog shit or remnants of? she has the whole park to use for the dog. let alone having a dog in an area which might put of small ones from entering. unbelievable and selfish, selfish.
thank you for saying something

WatermelonWomble · 27/10/2015 14:57

I live between two playgrounds (one has swings/climbing equipment and such, the other is just a fenced in area.) I take my dog in the second one but never would the first. I always take bags and my house is literally thirty feet away so if need be, I can grab a bucket of soapy water to wash away any traces (not that the pup soils in the very often- It's happened once in six months.) I also tend to use it very early in the morning, before anyone else is up! So I can kinda see both sides.

Orrery · 27/10/2015 15:02

Good for you - doesn't matter how long, doesn't matter how many bags - the sign says NO DOGS - unless its a guide dog. Why is this woman so individual and above the rules?

ptumbi · 27/10/2015 15:08

Dogs have no place n a playground - that's why it says NO DOGS! Kids and strange dogs do not mix.

It's also the reason school playgrounds are dog free.

Adamsapple · 27/10/2015 15:21

I do regularly take my dog into the play area but she is a small Shih tzu, so I always carry her and she sits on my knee while my son plays. I would never let her run about in the play area and agree that it's antisocial to do so.

WaitroseEssentialPancetta · 27/10/2015 15:25

YANBU anyone who takes their dog and its associated shitty arse into a children's play area ESPECIALLY when there are signs is a total dickbag.

celtictoast · 27/10/2015 15:26

YANBU

Fieryfighter · 27/10/2015 15:32

YADNBU no dogs means just that. It's not just the poo residue that may be left but pee as well, a dog in a playground for a length of time is bound to end up peeing up some of the equipment and a bag will do sod all for that

ptumbi · 27/10/2015 15:39

Adamsapple - so what part of NO DOGS does not apply to your DOG???

DotForShort · 27/10/2015 15:45

She was in the wrong. She shouldn't have had her dog in the playground.

However, you were a bit officious. Did you really think that she would comply when you told her off?

pilates · 27/10/2015 15:55

YANBU but she sounds ignorant and so wouldn't listen to other people.

Thank you for saying something, OP. For 13 years I was a village playground manager and reaponsible for asking people to take out their dogs. They always had a good reason for it, problem was that once one dog had been allowed in it made it hard to stop other people from bringing in theirs and doing really daft things--like letting a dog play football with a group of over -excited children, great for them, not so great for our insurance if one of them had been bitten, or for children who don't like dogs and might have been frightened to come in. Or the woman who thought it was ok to exercise five dogs in the playground during the foot and mouth outbreak because she couldn't use the footpaths. Lovely for the poor volunteer doing the grass mowing.

I am a dog owner and lover but I wouldn't bring my dog somewhere where it is not allowed.

Adamsapple · 27/10/2015 16:24

Ptumbi, as the main complaint - which I totally agree with - is dog shit, I don't feel I am doing anyone any harm by carrying a small dog into the play area.

Abraid2 · 27/10/2015 16:27

I was really grateful that it wasn't just me asking people to take out dogs.
