to not want to go out with any money?

I can't tell if I am being unreasonable or not.

My friend wants to go to an event, the night before I get paid, it's not a massive one-off, but the chance won't come around for a good few months. The event is free, but has a bar and goes on until late- so we would have usually got something nice for supper on the way back and a taxi.

This month has been so expensive. I have food in the cupboards and my bills are paid, but only about £6 of disposable income in my account.

She says we can have a few drinks at hers and not spend anything out.

I say, if I can't buy myself a few lemonades (with or without vodka) or get a taxi back if I need it, I don't want to go out. It's not about being able to spend £££ getting pissed, but generally being able to enjoy myself and have what I want.

Who is BU?

I thought the same re: payday loans (as in they cost a ridiculous amount).

Went on to wonga to check. They quoted a cost of 80p to borrow £50 for two days, which is all the op would need.

If it was something I really wanted to go to, 80p would not be an unreasonable prove to pay IMO. Cheaper than PayPal's 3% plus 25p.

But then I have no idea how much the op would want to spend.

3 choices ...

  1. How far away (in time) is the event - got anything you could ebay for a tenner?
  1. Or go, enjoy the free event and be a Scrooge for one night, won't kill you. Sure there will be lots of others there in the same boat (because they can't afford gig tickets so take what's free and make the best of it).
  1. Or don't go, so you don't miss having a lemonade at home, and miss out on the fun free event entirely.

A payday loan is not an option, glad you're not taking that advice!!!

I don't want payday loans on my credit report. I know then interest for a few days is absolutely minimal, but I don't want any mortgage broker confronted in black and white with 'hey! I can't budget!'

5oclock I said in my OP it's not about getting pissed, but going out for 4+ hours and not even having enough £££ to buy a drink to sip, or chips on the way home seems pretty miserable and limiting. Also, I live in a different direction to my mate- so if I for whatever reason missed the last tube I'd be a bit stuffed.

I also don't even have enough to top up my oyster for the journey there and back as my work travelcard doesn't cover central- but she doesn't understand as it's 'free'

You've been given loads of suggestions.

You've clearly made your decision so just tell her you can't afford to go.

Sometimes, the only sensible option is to miss out on something, no matter how much fun it would be. There are other options, but not very attractive or practical ones. Your friend is annoyed because she wants you to go with her, but you shouldn't mess up your finances or take risks with your safety getting home in order to make her feel better about not being able to find another friend to go with her.
