And if so, why?

I've recently joined Facebook. I was on it ages ago, came off and now on again as am trying to meet people and so on.

My friends have nearly all got photos of baking with their children up there.

Explain why this is part of childhood! I don't understand ...

I don't bake myself, you see, so I always feel a bit shamefaced when I see other peoples lovely cakes!

Savagebeauty · 25/10/2015 17:18

Never. I hate baking.

Leavingsosoon · 25/10/2015 17:18

Me too savage!

Cakes and buns just don't interest me.
Cooking yes.
And the mess Grin

PeppaWellington · 25/10/2015 17:27

TimeToMuskUp I bloody love you.

MrsDeathOfRats · 25/10/2015 17:27

Cook and bake with dd, she's now 3, started just before she turned 2. She loves being involved and It's quality time for me and her. She obviously loves the end result as well!
It has helped her dexterity of weighing out flour and sugar etc. Also her numeracy as she watches the scales for the correct weight. She understands that numbers can mean amount, weight etc.
The look of pride on her face when she can tell daddy 'I made the soup today daddy!!' And she watches to see if he likes it. It's so cute!
And like others say, it's a life skill.

DS is 13 months and can't wait til he is ready.

Scarletforya · 25/10/2015 17:29

No I do not. You can buy cakes in shops.

I bake with the kids they all enjoy it, and enjoy licking the bowl out and eating what we've made! In fact they like helping out in the kitchen in general, most of the time I'm shooing them away so I can get on with cooking in a hurry so it's nice if we've got a day at home they can experiment in the kitchen, I wouldn't put pictures of us doing so on Facebook though in fact I'm not even on Facebook!
I used to like doing the same with my mum I think it's a pretty 'normal' thing to do.

Leavingsosoon · 25/10/2015 17:42

I think my mum was like a PPs mum and found I got in the way too much! I absolutely think it's a normal thing to do, which is why I wonder why I hate it!

My friend can't understand why I bake with my kids. But she is the kind of mum who sits and plays make believe games with her kids and has regular craft days. I would never do that Grin so I bake with them because it's what I'm good at. Play to your strengths!

Savagebeauty · 25/10/2015 18:01

Oh I hated craft too.

Notimefortossers · 25/10/2015 18:14

Cooking is an essential skill too OP . . . maybe your cooking wouldn't be shite if your Mum had baked with you as a kid! Lol! I don't bake that much with mine, but they help me cook all the time. They love it and often bake with Nanny which they also love x

ReadtheSmallPrint · 25/10/2015 18:24

No, but that's because I don't particularly eat cake at home. It's not that I dislike it, I just don't really want it.

DH and I do plenty of other cooking with the kids though. DD loves making spag bol whereas DS is just interested in cooking and eating lots of meat.

Leavingsosoon · 25/10/2015 18:31

So it always has to be mums who bake with small children?

Just so we're clear?

OP posts:
Artandco · 25/10/2015 18:33

Leaving - no of course not. As I said mine were cooking with their grandfather this afternoon. Dh and cook and bake equally here so children help equally with us both

Leavingsosoon · 25/10/2015 18:35

My dad also did a lot of cooking.

FeelingSmurfy · 25/10/2015 18:41

My mum (yes it was mum in the kitchen but that's because dad worked longer hours) did a lot of cooking and baking with me and my sisters, my two older sisters have always been able to make proper meals and the occasional cake and I now do 80% of the cooking at home, so the time spent teaching me has paid off for mum!

It was just normal though, the way when you are cleaning you give a toddler a cloth and they "help". Mum was cooking so we wanted to be with her so she included us, it was no big deal, but no matter how many times we made something we still got a feeling of pride saying that we had made it

Notoedike · 25/10/2015 18:43

i love baking but not with very young dcs - they screw everything up and I am so very particular about baking. But I stuck with it and now they are confident enough to go it alone, which is a delight and I can sample the rewards....its all worth it in the end!

yeOldeTrout · 25/10/2015 18:53

DH prepares most of our meals.
DD now teachers younger brothers to bake :).

JoeMommuh · 25/10/2015 18:59

Can I just ask what you all do with the cakes and brownies and biscuits etc? Because I don't bake half as often as we should (son loves it) because if we have a tray of cookies out the oven I eat them. Gobble gobble gobble. Do you all have superior willpower and have a small nibble then make the baked goods last a fortnight with more small nibbles every few days?

I can literally clear a cake in 2 days! (Along with DH)

WhatamessIgotinto · 25/10/2015 19:02

DD makes amazing bread. Smile

Leavingsosoon · 25/10/2015 19:04

Blimey I could clear one in two minutes but not if DC made it!

NatashaRomanov · 25/10/2015 19:14

I occasionally bake with my 5 year old daughter.

I dislike having anyone else in 'my' kitchen, so someone small, messy and inexperienced is a real struggle!
Bit, I make the effort because she enjoys it, and being able to cook is an essential skill.

Leavingsosoon · 25/10/2015 19:14

I don't know ... I've managed thus far Grin
