My DH takes the block of cheese out of the packet, and then sits the cheese on top of the packet to chop it. This wrapper/packet has been handled by so many people! The Factory workers, the van loaders, the shelf stackers, the people in the supermarket that looked at it and put it back, the cashiers, and it's been on the sticky conveyor belt, etc etc. Surely there's a lot of germs on it?! It's not a big problem (obvs), but he doesn't get that I think that's a bit minging - use our clean chopping board instead. Am I wrong?

Folks worry too much about this kind of stuff and need to chill a little. Not everything is dangerous.
Rabid dogs/tsunamis = dangerous
Cheese = less so....

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 23/10/2015 23:10

I'm going to live dangerously and make myself some cheese cut on the packaging and crackers to go snack on with my Wine ..... I may not return Grin

HopefulAnxiety · 23/10/2015 23:10

Fridge doesn't kill stuff, freezer does (btw cheese freezes well). However I work in a food hygiene related job and while I obviously wouldn't do this at work, I would at home. I normally lift up the top of the packet and cut inside the packet though?

Katarzyna79 · 23/10/2015 23:11

brandnewandimproved thank you for the hilarious comment about teeth marks lool . I am severely ocd too but putting the cheese on the packet is not the worse thing in my mind door handles and germs on them are worse .

Someone said you aren't supposed to handle the cheese as in not remove from packet? Well wash hands dry remove grate, slice whatever pop back in if resealable or put in air tight container? hows it unhygienic to handle your food?

BTW most cheeses are moulds so isn't that far more unhygienic eating a mould? ;)

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 23/10/2015 23:15

I do that because I'm to lazy to get chopping board and clean it after, this way I can just brush crumbs of my germ ridden packet

RookieDad · 23/10/2015 23:15

It's fine, we have antibodies.

BrandNewAndImproved · 23/10/2015 23:16

kat door handles are something I can't cope with either! Any outside germs lol.

Absentmindedwoman · 23/10/2015 23:17

I slice it sort of still in the packet and let it freefall onto the plate I have the crackers/ bread/ whatever on Confused

If I'm just having a piece of cheese, I slice it into my readily poised fingers.

No need for chopping board OR for it to touch the outside of the wrapper!

Freezer kills dust mites, not germs Grin

Fridge slows bacterial growth down, freezer pretty much stops bacterial growth.
We all eat bacteria (and moulds etc) all the time - we have something called an 'immune system' that deal very successfully with that. Most of the time Grin
The immune system works best when looked after by a well-nourished body and when allowed some 'training' from time to time.

QuintShhhhhh · 23/10/2015 23:18

Why does he think the outer packaging is an adequate chopping board?

AnthonyPandy · 23/10/2015 23:18

I also think it is disgusting! BUT lots of things are gross and sometimes I make a conscious decision to look away. If I don't, then where do I draw the line?

A tin of tomatoes, placed in my cupboard, then put on the worktop, then I have touched it all over, and cut it or open it with the tin opener, bits of the tomato run over the lid, it all ends up in the saucepan, that contains about 10 revolting stages and other than to rinse every item as it comes into the house, what can I do? So I ignore it.

I am vegetarian so there's no serious danger of food poisoning, and I refuse to be that person who develops a habit of rinsing everything that has come from a supermarket.

Goldmandra · 23/10/2015 23:21

Shodan, I would definitely balance a slice of toast on the butter lid to butter the toast.

At what point do you introduce a plate?

Or don't you?

PaulAnkaTheDog · 23/10/2015 23:21

I do that. Not dead yet.

GreenPetal94 · 23/10/2015 23:27

I have done this my whole life and am never ill.

But if you must think about this... Your chopping board probably would register a higher level of bacteria as its been used over and over. The cheese wrapper is new and hardly handled.

GrammarTool · 23/10/2015 23:28

You know all that time you spent as a baby, crawling around on the floor putting all sorts of questionable things in your mouth? Then all of those years you were at school sharing germs with other snotty kids with poor personal hygiene habits (have you SEEN school toilets? Shudder)? Well, the effect of all of this was the development of a super-duper, tough immune system that can surely handle the outside of a cheese packet.

Kerberos · 23/10/2015 23:30

Late night cheese

AIBU t think that this is really unhygenic?
snottagecheese · 23/10/2015 23:31

Oh my good lord. Really? Really??! Wow. You're... overthinking things is the most polite way I can put it.

ForChina · 23/10/2015 23:32

Your chopping board probably has more risks - did you know that the average chopping board harbours more faecal bacteria than a toilet seat. Do you like eating poopy cheese? Well do you??

Honestly I do the cheese thing too. Saves washing up and no more germy than the outside of any other container. As others have said, opening crisps and then dipping your hand in, drinking from a can or bottle, opening the packet of bread and then touching the bread with the same hands you've just touched the outside with and making a sarnie, ripping open a packet of ham to put on your sandwich and then lifting the ham out with your fingers, pulling the wrapper back from a cucumber and then touching the cucumber with those same hands to slice it...

Mmmmcake123 · 23/10/2015 23:39

I do same as hopeful. Husband does same as op's (unless he sees me coming then he swiftly/casually gets a board out whilst holding the said cheese, it doesn't placate me, I have to ask him if he washed his hands before touching the cheese). Poor dh, haven't got a clue why he just doesn't tell me to do one Halloween Grin

Mmmmcake123 · 23/10/2015 23:43

China, you've just freaked me out lol. My chop boards go in the dishwasher after each chop session. All other examples, I either use a utensil bin terms of ham for example, always wash hands before crisps and never share.
On dear, think I have issues Confused

Corygal · 23/10/2015 23:46

Um, cheese = milk + germs.

HopefulAnxiety · 23/10/2015 23:47

Anthony are you an ovo-lacto vegetarian? In which case you are certainly at just as much risk from food poisoning from cheese and eggs, and actually fruit and veg can cause food poisoning too, as can rice.

I've had terrible food poisoning from salad!

chipsandpeas · 23/10/2015 23:48

ive done this and never been ill......but im not a germaphobe

yumyumpoppycat · 23/10/2015 23:49

YANB entirely U I have thought this when doing it myself but its not worth worrying about or bringing up with your dp, beside doesn't the friction from grating the cheese removes the germs ;)
