to maybe go and try on a full on wedding dress even though I am already married?

Our wedding was relatively low-key. I had a nice dress from the wedding range in Monsoon but mainly bought it 'cause it wasn't short, was off white, covered my shoulders and was in the sale rather than because I loved it.

I go by some wedding dress shops on my running route and I just think that maybe, maybe, I would like to go and try some on just to see what I would look like...

OMG

This is what comes over me at times. I had a beautiful, non-traditional, non-white dress, and sometimes I have the desire to drink champagne and see myself in a wedding dress.

I have watched too much Don't Tell The Bride

One thing: it won't be strapless

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 23/10/2015 18:14

No harm in trying them on.

As long as you don't start buying them!

ghostyslovesheep · 23/10/2015 18:14

oh I'll join you - I had a very nice rather plain cream frock

I now crave a huge blingy sticky out monstrosity - I yearn to try one on

Qwertybynature · 23/10/2015 18:16

YA definitely NBU. I loved my dress but I ordered it online and skipped the drinking champagne / getting trussed up with tiaras / trying on dresses way out of budget. I'd LOVE to do it now although I perhaps look a bit too jaded to pass as a bride-to-be!

harryhausen · 23/10/2015 18:17

I sympathise.

I got married 12 years when strapless/corsets were all the rage. I bought a very basic, straight strapless 2 piece. I didn't love it but thought it looked all right.

What I really wanted was a 50's-ish dress with sheer/lace sleeves like I see a lot of wedding dress shop windows now. I just didn't have the dedication and forsight to go looking for what I wanted back then. I think I was a bit embarrassed about being 'a bride' as it was.

Narp · 23/10/2015 18:18

I'd go slash neck, sheer sleeves, something pretty going on at the back

EponasWildDaughter · 23/10/2015 18:23

Do it OP, it will be a great laugh Grin

You never know, it might even make you glad you picked the dress you did!

doceodocere · 23/10/2015 18:24

Really? Can't see the appeal myself but if it will make you happy, then do it. But make a proper appointment and take along a "bridesmaid " or two.

notquitehuman · 23/10/2015 18:33

Go for it! As long as you don't go full on Muriel's Wedding and become obsessed with it...

We eloped for personal reasons and are thinking of having a vow renewal because my family feel a bit left out. I know I should wear something simple, but I'm also tempted to buy a big fat meringue and go full Jordan. Maybe because it's the total opposite of my personality and would shock people.

CookieMonsterIsOnADiet · 23/10/2015 18:33

What a waste of the shops time whilst you play dress up. Buy a second hand one and do it at home if you want to play brides.

Strokethefurrywall · 23/10/2015 18:42

I was just thinking this yesterday! I was saying to my friend (who is getting married next year) that if I were to do it all over again I would have a totally different dress. I loved my dress at the time, sure, but would love to go and try a whole other bunch on.

That's why David's Bridal is so good here - can go and try on without shame and/or being frowned upon!

ChilledAndPleasant · 23/10/2015 18:45

Yeah, Cookie - I didn't want to go full on appointment and waste time but don't want to try on some ill-fitting charity shop one either...

TBH, I probably won't do it - I'd be a bit embarrassed and I have no fake bridesmaids to strengthen my courage!

Fizzielove · 23/10/2015 18:55

I'm sure a few of us here could volunteer to be your (fake) bridesmaids!?

ChilledAndPleasant · 23/10/2015 19:08

Aw, Fizzie - am in Canada, though!

Next Mumsnet meet?

(Damn, wedding dresses don't age well.)

That headdress for Emily's dress (that Monica's wearing) was ridiculous
