To be annoyed about the rotavirus vaccine

I thought this one was at 12 weeks not 8 and so hadn't done much research on it. I booked a doctors appointment as DS has allergies and is prone to tummy upsets to discuss which vaccines were suitable. He said there would be no problems.

I wasn't warned about potential side effects until AFTER they'd given the vaccine. Poor DS is now having griping pains, screaming and not settling. He's not feeding properly and seems unhappy. I rang the GPs and got told "oh that's normal after rotavirus vaccine"

I also wasn't told it was a live vaccine that can be passed to me until after he had it. Brilliant when I'm a single mum.

DS was in NICU and nearly died, he had already had enough unpleasant things happen without being given a stomach bug. In the past few weeks he'd been doing really well, and now he seems ill

AIBU to think I should have been told about these side effects BEFORE he was given the vaccine and that it shouldn't have just been assumed I was okay with it? I'm really upset DS seems to be suffering :(

YANBU regarding not being warned beforehand about the side effects. They really should give out a leaflet at the 6 week check or something.

However I truly think the benefits outweigh the risks. My niece caught rotavirus at 2, she was hospitalised and dangerously ill with it. I caught the rotavirus off DD after her vaccine (she pooed all over me, I'd been meticulous with hygiene otherwise) I was so ill I actually wanted to die. Babies can catch it at any age, and they can't give the vaccine to babies over a certain age.

Can anyone tell me how long roughly the irritability lasts for. DD is 7 so has never had and never offered the vaccine.. Ds is screaming his lungs out atm :(

Hi, DD had a bad reaction and it lasted about 12 hours with some lingering effects for a couple of days after.

Okay well we're day two so hopefully it shouldn't last too much longer x poor little guy is normally so chirpy x

Sorry to hear the tough times you've been having, littler babies catch it from public changing tables unfortunately, my dd caught it at 2 weeks (first time I took her out alone) and was hospitalised. As awful as your experience has been, I'm really glad your little one is safer now, congratulations on your baby and very best of luck.
