Misuse of words( light hearted)

My dd constantly uses the word "like" multiple times in sentences, it's slowly driving me insane. Iv asked her so many times to not use the word unless it's actually needed in the sentence. To make matters worse she never ever stops talking so we must here "like" a thousand times a day. So aibu to either charge her 10p for every time she says it, or gag her? Is this something that's happening with most kids of today? Hmm

Not U at all....my friend says "generally" instead of "genuinely" and it drives me nuts. I told her that every time she does it I will flick her on the head Hmm

OfaFrenchmind2 · 22/10/2015 15:15

Sounds like the good old American "Valley girl" way of speaking. Slightly irritating, huh? :) Too bad it crossed the pond.

reni2 · 22/10/2015 15:15

Ollienoodles45isbananas was like totally annoyed and I was like really unsure why but then I remembered like teenagers often talk like this. YANBU.

Gruntfuttock · 22/10/2015 15:16

She needs an electric shock every time she says it. It's a very quick and effective form of aversion therapy. Can you get hold of a taser somehow?

QforCucumber · 22/10/2015 15:16

when people say 'why' instead of 'while'

really really grinds on me!

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 22/10/2015 15:18

Literally 1000 times a day Grin
That's a massive problem! Grin

Do you know is ds saying of the month.

Do you know hitler? Erm, no. Heard of him though...
Do you know the dinosaurs? Again, no. I might look that old...

The other one that makes my blood boil is "for free"

It is either free. Or for nothing.

Sell your car for free? I don't have a free. And if I sell my car, I will sell it for £3,000. Or whatever a fair price is at the time of selling.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 22/10/2015 15:20

10 sit ups for every like?
Extra washing up?

Send her away to write down what she needs to say.

And then, like, she can like read like the actual like words. Maybe? Grin

On a local selling board someone was advertising "Chester draws"..

BlueThursday · 22/10/2015 15:22

Using "yous" as the plural of "you"

Drives me insane Angry

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/10/2015 15:29

OP it's a modern day affliction. I'm a TA and all the children say it when asked a question in a sharing part of a lesson. Every answer starts with, "It's like when you like errr like, you know it's like....."

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/10/2015 15:30

Blue I think that's a regional thing, they say it a lot in Northern Ireland.

thebestfurchinchilla · 22/10/2015 15:31

Chester draws is hilarious, a piece of furniture only found in Chester I presume!

BettyRooster · 22/10/2015 15:32

Nonplussed. Often used to mean "unimpressed".

green18 · 22/10/2015 15:32

Children now say "I'm done." Instead of, "I'm finished." Another Americanism.

dogwalker75 · 22/10/2015 15:34

People who say generally instead of genuinely! Angry

lovemyway · 22/10/2015 15:35

My pet hate is the misuse of the word, 'Invite' when it should be 'Invitation' it makes me cringe every time.

BlueThursday · 22/10/2015 15:36

Yes best west of Scotland here.

I noticed it a lot too on real housewives of New Jersey - they must have Celtic influence Grin

Ollienoodles45isbananas · 22/10/2015 15:37

It is more than welcome to bugger off back over the pond Grin . Where can a responsible parent buy a taser from? Grin she never shuts up long enough to do the washing up. Chester draws has cheered me up Smile

Brought instead of bought. Usually it's possible to tell from the context what the person actually means, but this one has caused so much confusion on several occasions when someone has said they brought something yesterday and no-one being able to find it and panicking, when actually they had ordered it online so it hadn't been delivered.

lovemyway · 22/10/2015 15:43

Ditto Girlsailor

RainbowCake · 22/10/2015 15:49

Mine used to get a little flick everytime she added random likes to a sentence Grin she is 17 now and doesn't happen very often, maybe the flick therapy worked.
It seemed to peak between the ages of 12 to 15.
Does that give you any hope?

lovemyway · 22/10/2015 15:50

I love that rainbow will try it on my DD tonight. We always get at least 100 ;miles over dinner. Flick therapy sounds like at least it'll be fun for me Wink

lovemyway · 22/10/2015 15:52

What? I'm sure typed likes not miles. Damn keyboard!
