Yet another "god in school" thread...

My ds2 attends the nursery attached to the primary school my ds1 attends, it is a regular, non-church primary - though i know all schools have to do the whole "vaguely christian nature" thing.

I spotted some work on the wall in the nursery with (being nursery, must have been written by a teacher) "i thank god for xyz" written on it.

WIBU to query it, or should it just be ignored?

Why on earth would you think the school needs pulling up about what is written on one child's work. Genuinely don't understand why you think it's any of your business to tell the school what a child and his or her family are permitted to believe or have written on their work; obviously within the bounds of the law and good taste.

If all the children, including yours, had written it then yes perhaps you'd have a case for querying it, otherwise I fail to see how it affects you.

And why is it dodgy?

I'm anti religion of any kind, but people have the right to their own thoughts and belief systems, surely.

Thanks all. And groovee - that is intresting to know, thank yu :)

I didnt study it in detail, i am not aware whether it was a one off or not. It (at thtime) seemed an odd thing for a child to come out with, but then having two, i know they do tend to say peculiar things!! Grin anyway, i wasnt studying the work in detail to know if it was a one off, that sentence just caught my eye. I guess i'll have to find an excuse to go in and have a proper look!!

I did ask about thschools interpretation of the religion rule btw and was satisfied with their response.

Oh, just thought of something. Apologies for the dripfeed, seems my brain is drip-feeding me! Blush

I did attend a church school, where work would often be rather god based. So i guess on seeing it, th connection was made with it being taught rather than the child saying it, even though conciously i thought that the child had probably said it. If that makes sense? which made me do the Hmm face, as i have intentionally tried to keep my childrens upbringing different to my own.

In reception the children will be spending most of the time in free play, with teachers observing their development and noting what they say and do and then providing appropriate learning opportunities. So if it was a single thing rather than a wall of God related gratitude, then it was almost certainly certainly that the child came out with spontaneously.

I get quite uncomfortable about the level of church involvement in my dc state primary. They are told bible stories etc as if these are incontrovertible fact, rather than a belief system. There is no mention of the fact that other people believe different things and that some people don't helieve in God at all.

We teach children science and then peddle this stuff to them with no caveat. It bothers me.

If you did ask the question, and were satisfied by the response, I wouldn't worry.

I haven't read the full thread since posting near the beginning, but the thought has stayed with me since reading your OP that I am actually in favour of schools teaching about thanksgiving and the harvest festival etc. You have the right to take your child out of such a class, of course, and I would support that right. But I do see the lesson (if that is what it was) as a positive thing and would be sorry if this wasn't happening in schools generally..
