To consider taking this further (someone backed into my car and drove off without stopping)

Came out of daughters ballet class at community centre today and a lady came over to me to tell me that someone had reversed into my car not once but TWICE (apparently my car was rocking with the impact) and driven off without stopping!?!

She gave me the Registration details and her details as a witness.

It looks like there are CCTV security cameras on the building so unless they're fakes I could get proof.

The car doesn't look very damaged, it has a few scuffs but in all honesty not sure if they were there before or not..

Should I inform anyone? Will anyone care if no damage has been done? It's the injustice I can't stand..

AIBU to even consider this?

YANBU. Report it!

bornwithaplasticspoon · 20/10/2015 19:34

I would take another look in the daylight, you might have missed something if you're looking in the dark. I'd be peed off too but if there's no damage I'd let it go.. life's too short.

EternalDalmatian · 20/10/2015 19:35

There could be internal damage that you can't see.

I would at least contact the community centre to see if you can see the CCTV to get an idea of how hard the bump actually was...the woman may have got caught up in the 'excitement' and exaggerated...

Open the boot and see if it will close.

Impact could have damaged the bumper inside. They're designed to crumple. Report it asap

Dandelionandburdock1 · 20/10/2015 19:43

It's my bonnet, she seemed genuinely upset for me and couldn't believe they didn't stop and get out to check the damage.

Plastic spoon I know I should let it go but why is it ok for people to think they can get away with that kind of thing? Ugh. You're right though.

Report.

dodobookends · 20/10/2015 19:54

Definitely report it - There is a scam that some unscrupulous people operate in just this way. They deliberately reverse into your unattended parked car, and then report it to their insurance company with their 'witness' saying that you drove into them.

Junosmum · 20/10/2015 20:36

Report it to the police. The driver committed an offence under the road traffic act 197something.

You also need to report it to your insurance as it's technically an accident, even though you weren't present etc

Thirdly, if you want the cctv proof you need to act NOW, as it may get recorded over, sometimes every 24 hours.

Oysterbabe · 20/10/2015 20:54

Make sure there's no damage. If there isn't, what's the point in reporting it?

Chebs · 20/10/2015 21:01

I would report it.

I actually reversed into one a van owned by one of the parents at my sons rugby club this evening. I literally just kissed the passenger side, but I made him come and check it over and apologised profusely.

Can't believe people just drive off.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 20/10/2015 21:14

This happened to us, and we also had a witness. Reported, and the police are now prosecuting the individual. Our car was damaged but I would still complain if it wasn't, as it's disgraceful behaviour.

ilovesooty · 20/10/2015 21:14

I'd report it.

paulapompom · 20/10/2015 21:26

I'd report, visable damage or not. And its the bloody principle of it anyway. One new year someone hit my (very old) car, stopped, looked about then drove off. They were charged with failing to report an accident.

More recently I came out of the doctors to a note with a mobile no. A lady said she'd hit my car and would pay for any damage. I called her to say no damage was evident but thank you for your honesty, didn't take it further. (Also I had a feeling the 'hitter' was a stressed looking lady with a baby and a toddler who came running into the surgery).

But an acknowledgement and a little bit of courtesy is needed, If someone hits a car they should at least leave a note.

bruffin · 20/10/2015 21:30

This happened to us, witnesses came and told us it happened, gave us the numberplate. They denied everything and it dragged on for over a year and the insurance company dropped it in the end. Unfortunately it was in a dark school playground and the cctv wasnt clear.

DrDreReturns · 20/10/2015 21:33

Something similar happened to us last Christmas. My wife came out of a shop and a man said someone had collided with our car in the car park. He had the registration number of the other car.
We contacted our insurers and reported it to the police. The end result was our car was fixed on the other person's insurance policy, and the other driver had to go on an awareness course.
If the other party had left her details I would have been happy to deal with it between the two of us without getting the police / insurers involved, but she didn't leave any details which really pissed me off. The witness said it was quite a big impact (one wheel of our car was lifted off the ground) so she must have known she'd hit us.

Dandelionandburdock1 · 20/10/2015 21:44

It's the dishonesty which bothers me, i just can't imagine not stopping if it was me and as you say if they'd left a note I'd have let it go :(

So. The good news is that it was caught on CCTV and the community centre have saved it for me..
Still unsure as to what to do now but they're going to mention it to the person who runs the club that the person who bashed into my car attends and find out who it is that way rather than police.
Thanks for your advice

Maybe it's a member of staff they are covering for? I'd report it to your insurance company today

Babytookacupwoo · 22/10/2015 10:33

I know you're irritated but if you report it to the insurance company it will count against you in next years premiums. It shouldn't, but it will.

Babytookacupwoo · 22/10/2015 10:35

Sorry I should say may well. I have just had an increase due to a claim that wasn't my fault and my company didn't pay out for- and a friend recently queried an increase in premium and was told it was due to an accident she phoned them about didn't claim for. They said in both cases, you've still had accidents which ups your risk

OhGoveUckYourself · 22/10/2015 10:39

The person who drove into your car has committed a criminal offence by not stopping/reporting it to the Police within 24 hours if you are in England or Wales. You need to report it to the Police and they will (eventually) interview the driver and prosecute if necessary. You do need to report it to your insurance company as well. You have CCTV evidence for the Police to view, why would you not report it?????
