I can't help myself. The solicitor job with salary "dependant" on experience is really winding me up. I am fully aware that I need to get a life before anyone points this out to me.
There, I feel better just for posting.

Get a life Wink

No, they should proofread though.

I think you need to research the spelling op.

If you're in America then 'dependent' is the correct spelling and always has been.

The correct British spelling is 'dependant'...but 'dependent' has become an accepted variation.

But there's actually no error at all. 'Dependant' is correct.

DoveCazzoEIlMioCaffe · 19/10/2015 23:11

Wow OP. I'm the worst for getting irked by bad spelling but even I can't get excited about this! It's a questionable one anyway so you could end up looking rather as though you have mislaid your grip!

PantryofWhoGivesAFuck · 19/10/2015 23:12

dependent is the 'correct' British as it is the adjective, but both usages have evolved.

goingmadinthecountry · 19/10/2015 23:14

I understand a dependant to be a person that depends on you, and dependent is if something depends on something. Am happy to be corrected if I have the wrong meaning/spelling. According to OED the adjective is always -ent not -ant so I haven't lost the plot just yet.

A dependant would be a child/spouse.

I've just looked up a company that provides "quality online learning" - with apostrophes all over their plurals.

I really hope this is right or I've been teaching it wrong for 30 years!

OddSocksHighHeels · 20/10/2015 00:12

Yeah I thought that was right too.

MistressDeeCee · 20/10/2015 02:10

I get irritated by it too. I don't ask myself why, it is just so Smile

Now Im here thinking but isn't it "dependent upon" ...
