To shout at the next person that says the 5p bag money goes to charity

Firstly the government get a big slice of it from vat and secondly it goes to "good causes". Many large shops have created foundation trusts purely to bank this money with and the rules are not that strict on what actually happens to the money.

Everyone keeps saying it goes to charity and that is not true.

Even if usage goes down 90% with stores like sainsburys now doing jumbo thick bags for 5p that must use about 10x the plastic we will be no better off. Maybe worse off as the old bags biodegraded in a few years, these jumbo thick bags will probably take a century!

I was in a budget shop the other day and was asked to pay 10p Shock

angelos02 · 18/10/2015 22:52

Having seen first hand the devastation to wildlife, I would make it £10 per bag. This token 5 pence is a joke.

jaswales · 18/10/2015 22:59

Been paying for bags in Wales for ages you get used to it and you definitely don't use as many which can only be good for the environment. What's that saying Don't sweat the small stuff.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 18/10/2015 22:59

Carrier bags in Poundland are a whole £1.

Marue · 19/10/2015 08:37

my sainsburys bags in a cold damp shed also turned into dust.

Excellent. Write in to Loughborough University and tell them they're wrong?

Was your shed damper than the outdoors? I'd get that seem to.

Here is the guidance on the carrier bag charge in England (with reference to how it works in Wales) - it says retailers are expected to give the money to charity. But not required to, so you are correct OP. www.gov.uk/guidance/carrier-bag-charges-retailers-responsibilities

Also there was a lot of bleating in Scotland and Wales about this as well. So can people in England be allowed to bleat about it if they like please?

MollyCarpenter · 19/10/2015 08:52

King Joffrey - They are 5p in our Poundland or 10p for a larger one.

IrianofWay · 19/10/2015 08:58

Good god why does this cause some much angst. It's a minor inconvenience. I've been shopping in Aldi and Lidl for years so it's second nature to take reusable bags. You'll get used to it.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 19/10/2015 11:18

I was joking about the bags in Poundland being a £1.

I thought it was funny.

I'll get my coat...

IrianofWay · 19/10/2015 15:01

I thought it was funny too!

MollyCarpenter · 20/10/2015 14:48

I can't believe I was so dense. It WAS funny. I'm just slow! Blush Grin

Flambola · 20/10/2015 15:15

I can't believe people give this much of a shit about this.

thecatsarecrazy · 20/10/2015 15:48

This is why I hate working in retail. Today - "I need a bag but I'm not paying for it"
"we have to charge"'
" could you not give me one for free?"

thecatsarecrazy · 20/10/2015 15:50

Carrier bags in Poundland are not £1 they are 5p for a standard crappy one and 10p for a reusable one.

thecatsarecrazy · 20/10/2015 15:51

Oh yeah everything is a pound. Hilarious
