AIBU to go to A&E?

I was referred by my dentist to an oral surgeon because she saw something a bit untoward on an x-ray, and it turns out I have a mass the size of a satsuma in my face that has dissolved all of the jawbone bar a small sliver on that side. I was a bit in shock to find this out, as other than a few twinges I'd felt fine, even though the lump is pressing on the nerve supplying my lip and chin. It's due to be removed in 5 weeks.

Since seeing my consultant a week ago, I've had a few episodes of slight numbness, and today I had severe pain in my face which after a few hours has now gone away. I called my oral surgery department and the receptionist said go to A&E, but I feel a bit silly going to the emergency department saying that I had pain and numbness but it's stopped now. What would you do? WIBU to go to A&E?

Go to A&E, say you've been advised to by the oral surgery staff. Hope you're ok, must be scary for you Flowers

Oh and YANBU

RachelZoe · 15/10/2015 17:48

Go, they wouldn't have told you to go for no reason.

Sirzy · 15/10/2015 17:50

If they suggested it I would go.

Different issue but last week I was sent to a and e by the walk in centre thinking I was wasting their time but it turned out I really did need to be there.

StayWithMe · 15/10/2015 17:51

Please go to A&E. I would be concerned that you might end up with long term damage to the nerve if you don't get treated.

Claireshh · 15/10/2015 17:54

I would definitely go to A&E.

I had a similar thing almost two years ago. The thing I had turned out to be totally harmless and bone is regrowing. Have you had a biopsy or ct scan? the Maxiofacial professor I was treated by is one of the most caring people I have ever come across.

MammaTJ · 15/10/2015 17:54

You need to go to A&E. My fear would be that because it is affecting your sensation now, if removal is delayed, it may damage that nerve permanently. If you go to A&E, get admitted, they may hasten your op along.

Good luck!

Claireshh my CT is booked is 2 weeks' time. It's almost certainly benign apparently, just very big! My surgeon says he will biopsy after it is removed and that the bone should grow back in about 6 months.

If they have told you to go to A&E go!
If you were going of your own accord for nothing then you would be unreasonable but as you have been advised to go, go!
Hope it's ok!

Op Definitely go. YANBU, massively. Better safe than sorry and you don't want to risk not going and end up having the pain and numbness return this evening do you? :)

putcustardonit · 15/10/2015 18:13

YANBU to ask the question but I'm not sure what A&E can offer you apart from pain relief. Have you got some strong pain killers just in case?

goddessofsmallthings · 15/10/2015 18:19

Pain is a sign that something is going/has gone awry and if you don't act on the advice you've been given by the oral surgery department YABU and may be setting yourself up for complications further down the line.

The pain may have gone but there's no guarantee it won't recur at any time, such as in the middle of the night when it may be more difficult for you to present at A&E.

Get your jaw checked out this evening and ask for prescription drugs, or for recommendations as to what over the counter painkillers will be most effective if the pain starts again.

Flowers Go now - you know it makes sense.
