Sorry - but it made you look!

I've got a virus on my new laptop. I downloaded a fake google chrome clever and its changing the homepage and making popups come up constantly.

How can I get rid of it? Which are the safe malware removers?

Thank you very much!

OP, you're going straight to hell.

Chiming in to second Netballs' malwarebytes recommendation. Plus this: Search & Destroy.

Oh. I;m of work sick and I thought you'd just sorted my day.

I was wondering if I could drag my poorly arse to the kitchen for the popcorn Grin

A third vote for malware bytes...but if it is new new and you haven't set up much I'd be inclined to go for a clean install - you probably have a recovery partition on your hard drive - google the make and model and it should tell you how to access it.
When I had a real problem with DPs netbook and a virus I couldn't sort out (didn't have a recovery partition) I got advice from 'Majorgeeks'
(I get a special dinner cooked for me (and DCs) if I sort out a technical/computer problem for him - bribed with fillet steak Grin )

Malwarebytes is a good place to start. You need to do a scan on your computer without it bring connectec to the Internet. (Otherwise you could be downloading spyware at the same time as you are running the checker)
If Malwarebyes does not do the job you could try Adaware from lavasoft.

When downloading programmes or updates it's important to down load directly from the software company's website from than a general download site. A common example is a website asking you update Flash and then directing you to somewhere else in the web with a flash update. The malware is often bundled in with the flash update.

YouBastardSockBalls · 15/10/2015 13:09

Thanks all.

Will definitely get malwarebytes tonight.

Dammit, I opened this thread to be outraged..
Now what am I supposed to do with my outrage??

squoosh · 15/10/2015 13:26

Jump up and down whilst singing 'who let the dogs out?'

Dumbledoresgirl · 15/10/2015 13:31

Now what am I supposed to do with my outrage??

You could always go and take it out of some bread dough, or how about giving that furniture of yours a jolly good polish with the beeswax?

OydNeverDeclinesGin · 15/10/2015 13:32

I could do, but I'm on the bus Grin

KittyLovesPaintingOhYes · 15/10/2015 15:12

Oh god it's not binkiland is it? I got this imported with Firefox from a non-genuine site (oops) on my new works laptop - I was so embarrassed I worked out how to remove it myself on the quiet, without telling any of the menfolk and giving them a chance to laugh at the silly woman, and I'm crap at this sort of thing Grin

My DH would have launched it out of the window

standinginthedoorway · 15/10/2015 15:41

Curse you OP! This was shaping up to be a great flaming!

The fact I'm slightly disappointed has made me concerned about my apparent MN blood lust...

KittyLovesPaintingOhYes · 15/10/2015 15:46

Oh and now I've just read all through the Blacklight thread and have run out of time for knitting! Damn the internet and it's endless opportunities for time wasting to learn something new Grin

paulapompom · 15/10/2015 15:49

sigh Grin

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/10/2015 15:51

When the DC downloaded some random Minecraft related shite that buggered up the computer with pop ups I did a system restore back to a date before the download.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 15/10/2015 15:52

Never mind the hilaire bait and switch, wtf is this in aibu?

ElderlyKoreanLady · 15/10/2015 15:59

I use Spybot Search and Destroy. There's a free version which is very good or you can get the better home edition for about £7. Run it while not connected to the internet. Then open all browsers you have installed, go into 'extentions' and remove any that look bad. Then reset those browsers. Remove any new software that you don't recognise...Advanced Uninstaller is good for this as it gets rid of associated files. It's free for a month. You can also use it to check nothing's been added to your start up procedures. Finally, remove anything new from your program files. Only turn WiFi back on once all this looks clean and you've emptied your recycle bin.

patterkiller · 15/10/2015 16:14

It's just hit me. Do you think 'Jeremy' could of been blacklight on a vengeful campaign after the ladeez made his pecker shrink with our brilliant cleverness Shock

TalkinPeece · 15/10/2015 16:21

another vote for malwarebites : it dealt with my problem

then again have you tried big red button?
ie completely powering down for 10 minutes and then powering back up : that often unwinds loops in programmes

unlucky83 · 15/10/2015 16:32

If you try the power down approach on a note book take the battery out as well as unplug from charger. One notebook (lenovo??) I looked at you could do a reset thing without the battery or power ...which I found a bit weird...
