Is it 'is for Fox' or 'as in Fox'? Problem is that at the beginning of a word it makes a different sound.

I suppose "X is for Xenopus" doesn't flow as easily?

I remember being very annoyed by this at the age of 5! I remember seeing "axe, box, fox..." on various alphabet charts. X-ray or Xmas were acceptable in my view.

YANBU This annoys me too!

Xenophobe? That's the first that sprung to mind.

There are lots here:

www.wordfind.com/starts-with/x/

Not sure any would be suitable for a primary school class.

What was wrong with good old xylophone?

Sooty is the same!! The abc dvd has x at the end of something! What on earth is wrong with x-ray!!!

Report
Duggee · 14/10/2015 11:58

They are trying to get the x sound on its own. Xylophone has an "ex" sound rather than a short x.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 14/10/2015 12:00

Xylophone makes a Z sound. Its a terrible example for X.

Report
BoomBoomsCousin · 14/10/2015 12:13

But X often sounds like Z.

You don't say "Y is for sillY" because Yellow is more of a J sound.

Report
fredfredgeorgejnrsnr · 14/10/2015 12:15

Wouldn't ox therefore be better, as it as more of just the x sound?

Report
SoupDragon · 14/10/2015 12:15

because Yellow is more of a J sound.

Confused

The sound x is supposed to be like saying "'k-s" according to our jolly phonics book, which is why as in Fox is a good example. X as in x-ray is the letter name.

As for yellow is more of a J sound - WTAF??

Report
Osolea · 14/10/2015 12:18

X ray doesn't make the right sound.

Report
Arkkorox · 14/10/2015 12:21

Yellow Yellow Yellow

Yeah I'm not getting the J.

DearTeddyRobinson · 14/10/2015 12:24

Oh oh and it's not a squiggle stick, it's a friggin CRAYON. Hate that programme!

I've got an app on my iPad which uses fox for X. It's in an American accent so it sounds like fucks.

BertieBotts · 14/10/2015 12:30

J in many languages is pronounced as the English Y in yellow. The international phonetic alphabet symbol for the y-in-yellow sound is /j/.

Yeah I had exactly the same thought when DD used to watch that shite.
Not getting the J sound in yellow...

Isn't because squigglet is based on phonics , and phonics really doesn't work for most some of the English language so they have to bodge it.

Report
BeaBoo · 14/10/2015 12:48

This irritates the life out of me. DD loves to watch it and I just have to put up with it Angry

We use X is for Fox in jolly phonics. You need a word that actually uses the sound. Words beginning with X don't do it.

TheNewStatesman · 14/10/2015 12:51

"But X often sounds like Z."

Only in words like xenophobe, which young children are unlikely to come across.

They are most likely to come across the letter x in words like box and six. Hence, this example is used.

Xylophone is a word lots of kids will come across. As well as x-rays, x-men etc.
